College Food?

Ok,so i know that food will vary from school to school. How many of you eat out alot? Is that a problem eating out so much or is walking to all your classes taking care of it?Maybe you cook for yourself. Just give me a little insight in what you guys do. Thanks!

It obviously depends on your living arrangements and the dining options available at your school.

At my school most students live in the dorms (cheaper than a room on the private market in walking distance of the college). The dorms don’t have kitchens, so cooking for ourselves is out. The closest restaurants are a 15-minute walk from campus and the closest fast food is 20 minutes away; not a good option for everyday food either. That leaves the dining halls and cafes on campus, which is where most of us eat most of the time.

Thanks. Where i want to go to school (PSU) the campus is pretty much next to a small town that has places to eat plus the dining halls. Thanks again!

I looked around my college cafeteria once and was too grossed out. Luckily I have a kitchenette.

At my current school we don’t have kitchens(This is for the male dorms, for some reason the female ones do) in the dorm and the closest thing to cokking ware we are allowed to have is a microwave. Theres a checkers about 10-15 minuts away (Walking distance) thats really popular and people are always ordering out for chinese or pizza. That having been said the cafeteria is still really popular and the majority of students like it. I don’t however, the foods basically the same as fast food and not healthy at all. I’ve been to other schools though (FSU, UCF, USF) and I enjoyed the food they served their.

As a freshman on campus I had to get the meal plan so I do try to eat in the cafeteria, otherwise its money wasted. Persoanlly I wouldn’t even suggest getting a meal plan as they’re too expensive. You can save money just doing your own shopping and cooking. Overall, if you get a meal plan you’re probably going to like the food in your cafeteria so you’ll want to eat there.

Where I used to go ( UNCFSU, although i’m in the process of getting back in) I had a meal plan for the 3 years I spent there. The food was pretty decent, although my concern was that they would serve the same thing 3-5 days in a row! For example for dinner you would have pizza/pizza/pizza for days!

As far as eating out, I didn’t eat out that much…

Most people here eat the majority of their meals at the dining halls. My dorm is connected to the best dining hall on campus so I eat there often. The food is edible, some things are actually pretty good (killer made-to-order nachos) but it can be repetitive, so most days I will eat a meal or snack off-campus - there are a ridiculous amount of great restaurants around here.

One complaint I have with my dining hall is that the hours are stupid. It’s open for most of the day for breakfast/lunch, but then it shuts down at like 1:30 and only opens from 5-7 for dinner (5-6 on weekends!!!) and I like to eat pretty late, so that’s annoying. We do have a convenience store that you can grab a snack or microwaveable thing from, but I still wish the dining hall were open later.

My school has pretty good food so most days I eat on campus. Maybe once every 2 weeks I’ll go eat off campus at somewhere like B dubs, 5 guys or Panera. Our cafeteria is open from 7am-10pm so I’ve never really had problems with timing.

I am so glad that I live in an apartment. I got so sick of college food. I love to cook to being forced to be in a dorm was awful.
