Question regarding true college life:

While living at a rather large state Uni, is there ever a chance to have some food that has actually been cooked? or cook some food yourself? I'm not familiar with dorms, maybe theres a common kitchen or something?

And, regarding the food on the meal plans in the cafeteria, is it usually like high school cafeteria food or is it more... real...

Excuse my cluelessness.

1) Dorms usually have a small kitchen with an electric stove to cook food. Whether you actually want to use/trust the stove is up to you.
2) Cafeteria is more like a food court at a mall. There's a Burger King, Einstein Bros. Bagels, a sushi spot, etc.

Cafeteria is more like Old Country Buffet (okay, not really, OCB's food is crappy). More like Golden Corral, if you have those.

Then your school will probably have a food court too, which is like the food courts at some malls.

It depends who "caters" it. I had both Aramark and some other one...both crap.

We had a food court style thing as well.

Golden Corral is a good example of dining hall food. I suggest getting a george foreman.

i go to a large state university
my dorm of about 260 only has one kitchen, and it stinks pretty much.
the food at the dining halls vary....two have amazing food, although it is not healthy @ all because it is very greasy/fried/in amazing sauces etc.
the other two have terrible food....i usualyl don't even eat hot food but stick to sandwiches/salads/cereal
i guess it depends on the school

I'm at a large state university and it's not too bad. I'm an extremely picky eater, so I didn't get the meal plan, but the cafeterias are all surprisingly good. There's a wide variety of food to choose from, and the menu changes daily. As far as kitchens go, we have one on every floor of the dorms here, complete with counter space, sink, oven and microwave. Personally, my George Foreman grill has been my hero.

we only have one "real" dining hall, but i've never been there so i couldn't tell you how that is. our meal plan covers all the different places to eat on campus though, so unless you live in that area you really dont eat there much or at all. The student center houses a Chik-fil-a, an Au Bon Pain, a pizza/pasta place, a Starbucks, a burger place, and a cafeteria-style place. They're all pretty good, even the cafeteria place sometimes (esp when they have mashed potatoes and rotisserie chicken). I would say most people probably eat at chik-fil-a and au bon pain the most, those two are usually the most crowded. There's also an Einstein Bros bagels and a deli in one of the dorms (open to everyone). These are all pretty tasty options.

As for the dorms, we had one kitchen for about 150 people, but it got used fairly often. We used to make pasta, boil eggs, bake, etc. One time the RAs closed the kitchen for a week because people set off the fire alarm like back to back days.

I go to Rutgers. My dining hall on my campus is actually pretty good. I would much rather them cook the food then me cook for myself :)... im not a great cook :(

I've eaten at UConn several times and the food isn't bad. A lot of it is self-serve, buffet-style and most of it is cooked on premises rather than simply being reheated. Also, a lot of universities offer apartment-style living so you can cook your own food in a shared common room, and most that I've visited also have floor-wide kitchens if you want to cook something for yourself and don't have a private kitchen. Even here at a small LAC, we have several dorms with full kitchens students can use.

i go to a large private, and i must say that the food is not bad. we have a variety of dining halls to choose from, so i haven't really gotten sick of it... yet. most are traditional buffet style but there's one with a food court like thing w/ a burger place, chick-fila and quiznos.

in terms of being able to cook in dorms, only 2 of the freshman dorms have kitchen availability (apartment style), but all upperclassmen dorms have kitchens included.

At my university, the dorms don't have any kitchens. It's apparently a fire hazard.

As for the university food, there are four dining halls, each has more or less the same types of food but a few specialize in various things (the one downstairs in my dorm building has mostly "American" food like burgers, pizza, etc., there's one close to it that has a great salad bar, another that has really good pasta,) and there are also three On-Campus "Restaurants." There you basically go and order a meal (A sandwich, chips or fruit, and a drink) and that costs you one swipe. It's good if you're in a hurry and need to eat fast, or wanna eat in your room because you're studying or something. The university food in general is pretty good, albeit pretty fatty.
