I just finished my first semester at PSU and got all Cs. I want to be a Speech Communication Disorders major but I'm worried. I know I have to get into grad school and I am wondering if I stand a chance. I am an average student (always have been and I am not a great test-taker and have issues with reading comprehension). I worked hard this semester and, to be honest, I've heard it only gets harder and if this is the best I can do....what are my chances.

I'm scared.

I love people and working with kids especially and am thinking about something where I don't need grad school may be a better choice for me.

Any suggestions? I don't think I want to be a teacher.

Anybody know about what jobs you get graduating with a Bachelor's degree from the Human Development and Family Studies program?

It is way too early to give up on your dream; the first year of college is always an adjustment. Have you been in touch with the Learning Center? They might be able to help you with test-taking skills. Have you talked to an HDFS advisor? According to their website your faculty advisor should-- “Discuss the educational and career objectives suited to the student’s demonstrated abilities and expressed interests. The adviser helps the student to understand the relationships among the courses, programs, undergraduate research opportunities, internships, study abroad programs, and other academic experiences provided by the university.” Do you have a faculty advisor you can meet with? This would be a good time to set up a meeting early next semester, after the faculty has had a chance to catch up over break. There are people available to help, but you need to get in touch with them. Setting up an appointment now will also allow you to enjoy your break, knowing that you’ve done what you need to in order to get on track.
