Hi, long time lurker first time poster.
Senior son stats GPA 91 weighted GPA 95, SAT 2070, ACT 28.*Not many extracurriculars president of Tech club, minimal volunteering, works part time. Would like to major in Comp Sci with minor or concentration in game design if possible.
Think a smallish school would be best for him, not a party school, too preppy or Greek, sports unimportant. Would like to stay in NE area.
Does anyone have any other suggestions or first hand information on these schools? *Thanks!
So far the list is:
WPI
RPI
U Rochester
RIT
Stevens
Binghamton
Manhattan
Marist
High Reach: Cornell or CMU

My son goes to RPI, and I’d describe it as a great fit based on the description you gave. What was your son’s math SAT/ACT score?
At least some on your list, including RPI, will look for 700 or better, from what I understand.

I don’t know how Marist or Manhattan are, but the rest of the list seems reasonable. It’s possible Stony Brook might be better than Binghamton for CS, but my son didn’t apply to either 6 years ago when he was looking at schools. (He ended up at CMU and loved it.) Do you have a class rank to go with that GPA?

I liked RPI a lot and know two people who attended and did well. The young woman, a bio major, liked it less well I think, but she flew through in less than four years, did research and ended up in grad school at Cornell where she’d wanted to go as an undergrad. The son is doing engineering and it’s perfect for him. It’s got lots of gaming stuff, some interesting nerdy clubs and too many a Capella groups (just kidding!) WPI seemed much smaller and cuter. We were led around by a very vivacious young woman who did theater for an EC which sort of colored our feeling for the place. My brother is in a CS related business in Boston and they hire WPI grads a lot.

Thanks so much for all the additional suggestions. I will check them out. Math mom: I know Stonybrook is ranked better for CS but for some reason my son didnt like it and Binghamton is not at the top of his list anyway. Thank you for all the helpful RPI info. 1214mom: SAT breakdown was CR660 M700 W710. ACT math was 28. He will only submit SATs.
