Hey, I am from a tiny tiny town in Iowa... I really don't have much experience in film because there are simply absolutely no opportunities to do anything where I live. I really want to get into UCLA's film program. However, I heard it was extremely competitive. I know you cannot apply there as a freshmen, so I could have good chances of getting into the college in the first place. However, I do not want to get in there and be rejected for film and end up screwed. So could anyone offer me advice on getting in? I was thinking about going to SFSU for at least my first two years in their film program to get started in that and get gen eds out of the way. SFSU really has been the only other college in California that has a very well respected film program that I have found that I can get into without needing to submit work I have done in film (obviously I do not have any). However, If you know of any other good ones I would like to know (keep in mind that they cannot require I submit work I have done).

I did kind of want to go to LA, seeing as that is kind of the epicenter of all things film in the USA... But SF has lucas films. Speaking of which, does anyone know if SFSU associates with Lucas Ranch and gives internships out there for their film students?

Hi, it is a good idea to study in one of the California’s public colleges before you go to UCLA. But rather than transfer from SFSU to UCLA, I’ll suggest you to either complete your degree at SFSU, or study in a California community college for the first two years and then transfer to SFSU or UCLA, because it is harder to transfer from a CSU to a UC than from a CCC to a UC.

SFSU is a FOUR year school. That means you would barely take four film classes the first two years and Lucas internships don’t start until junior or senior year. CSU’s and UC’s are different school systems that you don’t transfer between because are each FOUR year schools. When one picks a 4 year school that is usually with the intention of completing all 4 years at that school or system.

A transfer is one that goes to a TWO year CCC and then chooses the CSU or UC path. If you want to live in Nor-Cal for your first two years then one would go to De Anza for production, ohlone for production/broadcasting/stagecraft or DVC for mix of film studies with TV production or CCSF for broadcasting/electronic media to transfer to SFSU’s Broadcasting program.

In the LA So-Cal region one would go to PCC for Film Production, Glendale for Film Studies, and SMC for film studies and/or SMC’s Entertainment Academy for the more intensive computer and business film skills.
