College holding my transcript, wondering about a loop hole.

I started college back in august of 07. Got half way through my sophomore year and then transferred to another school out of state. I had pell grants but they were not enough to cover the non-resident fees. I was supposed to recieve a loan that would have covered the balance, but it did not go through. Regardless, my classes ended up all being dropped and I've been stuck out of school, owing money to a college I didnt receive a single credit from. An idea just came to me that I'm wondering if someone could help me out with. Simple enough, I'm wondering if I could request my transcript from the original college (that I owe no money to) and start off at another school. Now that I have established residency, money is not a problem. Would anyone know if this is a viable idea? If there are any loop holes preventing this from working? Otherwise, I am going to have to start all over again with my high school transcript. I don't want to have to do that but I really want to get my college under way again.

It’s not a viable idea because you can’t just ignore the fact you’ve got this outstanding debt. Any college you apply to in the future will plug your SSAN to the National Student Clearinghouse (google this) and pull up the fact that you were dropped from that 2nd program, owing money.

If money is no longer an issue, perhaps you should make an appt w/your debtor school and work out a way to get them to clean the slate. It’s likely they’ve already written off the debt. Go in and negotiate a pay off amount. Good luck.

Well, if I can get my education going at another school and pay off the debt to previous school while I am being educated, that would be ideal. One thing I have learned is that debts, in any form, always have a way of catching up to you. I just know that if I am going to get any where in life and do any of the things i want to do, I need an education. I think its unfair that that school would have me wait several more years to pay off this debt before I can finish my education elsewhere.

To be clear about the money not a problem statement. I mentioned that in regard to me now having established residency. Out of state tuition is exorbitantly expensive, I do have the ability to afford in-state tuition though.

There is noting ‘unfair’ about having to repay your current debt before you take on more. You can rationalize all you like, but the fact is that you’re trying to attend a third school without paying your debt to your second school.

What is unfair is that the academic advisor allowed me to start classes before the loan came through. I dont mean to digress, but teaching myself all mathematics required for a bachelors degree in that field is rather discouraging when I realize that without the degree, it means nothing. Regardless, I will be speaking with an advisor on Monday. Thank you for all the help.
