I think you guys are underestimating just how cowardly and oblivious politically correct administrators can be. Everybody is the same to them, and if they did put all the downtrodden in one dorm, I can easily see them avoiding confronting the problem, lest they admit that it's possible that certain ethnic or economic groups are behaving differently than others. They are very quick to rush to judgement against affluent white males (e.g., Duke lacrosse team), but they are in denial about other groups being capable of wrongdoing.

If you want action - contact the press. Local newspaper or television stations in the area. If you have proof (crime stats would work), usually reports at colleges and universities are public record - so even you, a public citizen can file a Freedom of Information request or State Open Records request - for the number and kinds of complaints filed on the campus, and if you have students that will talk - preferably more than 1, and preferably those will give their names and show their faces. Some media outlets will let them remain anonymous if there are good reasons (loss of scholarship, fear for safety). Get this information together and go to the press - the media is very good about holding such entities accountable. If you go to one and they ignore you - go to another one.

I tried googling around for this story, but all I could find was the murder of Betsy Aardsma in the 1960s.

However, I was taking a class at a local, non-flagship state university a few years ago and they were having a rash of attacks and rapes. The local press didn't report it, and the university didn't tell us until after one of the student groups threatened to go public. By that point there had been several attacks in the parking lot (commuter school).

I don't think its outside the realm of possibility that the school is having a mini-crime wave and is not reacting appropriately.

OP, if you are not lying then certainly you would reveal publicly what school you are talking about, right?

there should be nothing to hide...

It's always possible that a public institution is covering something up to avoid bad press. It's also possible that those with the softest voices (the poor) are being taken advantage of. Go to the media and report it.

wow i am suprised at how incredibly naive some of you are. aside from murders i can believe robberies and drug deals occur on a daily basis. i also can believe that a university would put all of its fin aid students in one dorm. OP can u tell me the name of this school because I am not applying to any schools in Penn but I did stay at a university there over the summer for a sports camp and the conditions were down right horrible.

Has anyone heard of exaggeration? Doesn't mean there aren't problems - quite possibly just not to the extent he is talking about. Just because we believe there may be some legitimacy to it - doesn't mean we are naive. Be nice.

i'm gonna guess that the university mentioned is Millersville of Pennsylvania...the school has had tons of problems and tends to cover them up

slippery rock is also a possibility...they have new dorms w/ snazzy amenities

i did not PM the OP...these are just honest guesses

I think it's suspect that all the fin aid kids are in one dorm, there are a lot of kids on fin aid at public universities. Also, is there a dark cloud surrounding the dorm? How far away from the rest of the campus is the dorm that everyone can just ignore it?

OP-

The students who are having these negative experiences should contact the nearest Legal Aid clinic for free, reasonably competent legal advice.
