College horror story

My cousin, who attends a non flagship state school in PA, just finished her first semester. She is very poor, and was on 100% financial aid. She has made friends and everything, but has had a downright traumatizing experience.

There is a dorm on campus where they put all the financial aid kids. In essence, it's a de jure ghetto established by the University. The building is run down and there is absolutely no security. Drug deals occur routinely outside. There are robberies, shootings, even murders in and around the dorm on a daily basis. If you are less fortunate, this is where you are stuck.

Instead of addressing the security problems, though, the school has been putting up several new dorms, complete with amenities such as movie theaters and dining halls. It is just about the most outrageous thing I have ever seen.

My cousin's roommate was raped in their dorm room within the first two weeks. The school offered no services to my cousin (I don't know about the girl), and didn't even offer to move her from the room. Traumatized by the experience, our extended family is forced to pay 3000 a year in order for her to be safe and able to focus. I have told her to pursue legal action against the school, but the school is protected from anyone in this hall sueing by virtue of the fact that they can't afford lawyers.

No support is offered. Due to a technicality that was never explained to her, they revoked her financial aid. Once again, the family will pay for her to stay, and she will need to reapply for aid.

If you think you are worried you are applying to this school, feel free to PM me and I will tell you the name. I don't want to post it, because I wouldn't put it by these guys to hold it against her.

I don't believe this story. You are up against a big challenge if you are trying to convince anyone here that people are murdered daily in and around her dorm. Also, I cannot think of any school in PA where there would be lots of murders, except maybe near Temple. But students at Temple are rarely murdered, and I know definitively that Temple doesn't put all of the financial aid kids in one dorm.

He didnt say murders daily, but robberies, murders, etc. daily. Still should be reported on federal crime stats, availaible to all parents. I dont think any college puts kids on aid seperate, but they likely wont be in any luxury dorms.

"There are robberies, shootings, even murders in and around the dorm on a daily basis."

That includes that all three occur daily

No, review your grammer. That means any of the three occur on a daily basis.

I any case, I meant that any of the 3 happened daily (which admittedly is an exaggeration, though it is often and there are constant drug deals in front of the dorm). This is not a school that most people on college confidential would attend or even look at.

I also found on the dormitory's facebook group today people praising the dorms "ghetto" repuation (they used that word), and plans to vandalize the more upscale suites.

coolman 123 is right. this story is ridiculous. there is no way something like this is happening. you really think there's all these kids being put in this situation and NO ONE has gone to the police? whether or not the murders actually occur daily, don't you think people would take more notice of something like this? you're all really gullible.

It would be a public service for you to post the name of this school. Surely the internet has seen unsubstantiated anecdotes before. This could be of real help to some.

This HAS to be made up or at least insanely over exaggerated. First off there a drug deals made at almost every campus, second off....I highly doubt that people are getting murdered on a campus, and the school does not care about it whatsoever. I don't believe that the university would choose to make a 'ghetto' dorm or even allow one. College is a business, and no college wants something that is bad for their business i.e. a 'ghetto dorm' where "robberies, shootings, even murders" take place in and around the dorm on a daily basis." Also, why would the family pay for her to stay if it was truly as terrible there as you claim....wouldn't she be better off at a community college? I WOULD like to know the name of this college, as I'm sure everyone else would too. If the college in question is truly this heartless then they do not deserve name protection.

do you mean rape as in some men just knocked the door down and gang banged her while tying hands behind her back or she and some other dude got drunk, both had a little fun, and went too far? there are many definitions of rape because rape is so subjective. example : if i am having sex with a girl and she tells me to stop but i didn't hear what she said because of whatever reason and i take too long to stop then that can constitute as "rape" and many guys have been sued like that.

^ i lolled.

but anyway i think the definition of rape is besides the point. the person had an extremely bad college experience, and people do. it sucks for her. but we cant dwell on it for ourselves, almost no one has this bad of an experience. this should not dampen our outlook on college at all. i will remain positive and optimistic, as we all should.

My son attends a private college in PA and I am very concerned with the jump in crime. Before the weather turned cold, there were several robberies each week within blocks of the campus. I don't think the campus crime statistics will show most of them, because the criminals seemed to prey on students returning to the dorms after nearby off-campus parties. I believe many areas are seeing an increase in crime due to the economy. OP's cousin should be looking at transfering,if things are as bad as she claims, and financial aid is no longer available to her.

I'm surprised at how inhuman some of this posters in this discussion appear. Calling the OP a liar and undermining his/her comments is really lowly IMO and I find it hard to believe that people as intelligent as alleged CCers claim to be can lack such insight and compassion.

The OP is obviously trying to express a problem that he/she is facing and whether or not its true should definitely not be the first thing that comes to our mind.

I've met people with stories that are out of this world but completely true at the same time. The ability to believe the unbelievable is (IMO) one of the most commendable traits I can find in someone.

Again, I am truly shocked at the replies made here and I WISH COLLEGES COULD REALLY SEE THE UNIMAGINATIVE, CLOSE-MINDED PEOPLE THAT APPLY TO THEIR SCHOOLS." As if we need anymore pessimists in our society.

To the OP, I'm willing to hear you out and I am definitely going to do a bit of investigation into the school's policy. If someone doesn't make a noise nothing will change.

BUMP
-NB

this story is absolutely absurd and cannot be true. if it were true, the college would have more lawsuits than it could deal with, and would probably cease to exist.

the internet - serious business
I for one think this thread is BS

OP; You said

"Traumatized by the experience, our extended family is forced to pay 3000 a year in order for her to be safe and able to focus."

Who is "forcing" the family? Do you know that the $3K is for?

I think it means that the student had to move into a more expensive/safer dorm.

My first year at Boston College, I was placed in a dorm that was all white males on the first floor, all black males on the second floor, and all black females on the third floor. The college no doubt thought it was doing something progressive, but it was indeed a "ghetto dorm" for all of us.

haha scarlett if you are unable to realize how made up and exaggerated this story is then you are a complete fool, I mean come on....seriously?

I'll get McNulty and Daniels on this right away.
