College Houses -- Co-op dorm living

We visited Pearl St Co-op. It's a good fit for my son. As a boy scout he's ok with sleeping in a tent So a private room is a bonus! Manual labor is no big deal to him.

We had a nice student give us an off the cuff tour. No it's not new and glitzy. It's quite dated But it's OK. 24/7 kitchen (can go fix a sandwich anytime ...just like home) Pool. 4 to 6 hours of work duty a week. Price is right for a private room w/shared bath. 1/2 of San Jac's price. Toilet paper included. :). Hope he gets a room offer.

My son has already received his contract for the Taos Co-op on Guadalupe. It’s very close to his engineering classes. He said he wants a double, so that’s fine with me! You sure can’t beat the price.

On his application he put Taos and Pearl both as his #1 choice. He does not want 21st Street. We didn’t even visit. Of the College Houses options, that has the rep as being the “hippie commune”.

Okay, well all the co-ops are rather bohemian, but yes, 21st street is probably the wildest.

I’m living at the Pearl starting at the end of May for my sophomore year! In comparison to on-campus living, I’m saving about $2,000 which is a lot for me! There’s also a lot more basic freedom that I just love. Like the fact that I can keep a toaster in my room if I so desire — not a possibility on campus! Silly things like that. The pool is one of the biggest plusses for me too! Oh my goodness and PARKING. Out of my financial aid pocket, I paid $900 to have a 24/7 parking garage pass for UT. To park at Pearl it’s something like $60 bucks per semester - $120 dollars. Beat that, right! One last tid-bit, to wash and dry on campus is a dollar and at Pearl is $.75. That adds up over time too! Nice little save!

Make sure he returns his contract promptly and picks a good room! I’m on the same track too!

He sent the application a couple of weeks ago. We hope to hear any day now. Spring break was last week, so we expect a delay.

Yeah, son offered choice of single or double, Taos or Pearl. Wonder which he will pick? Thank you, College Houses for offering AFFORDABLE housing.

If only my parents would let me live in a co-op ;_;

I don’t have a say where my son lives. He is covering that part of his college expenses. We covered tuition & req’d fees.

I sent in my son’s co-op contract and deposit today. From looking at the online site, I think the rooms are filling up faster than last year.

Yeah. I applied last November! That was because I had really wanted to live in the coops for my freshman year but my mom insisted I live on campus at least for the first year. So after agreeing to that compromise, I was ready to jump on 2011-2012 for my next living location.

I really can’t wait to move in! It’s going to be great!

Deposit via Pay Pal last night. Faxed over application today. 8)

Eaglemom…so it’s for sure UT?

Yes, its for sure UT! He got a single room at Taos. I’m exicited he reached a decision. I was in Austin this last weekend for business and picked him up the Davey Crockett bumper sticker. I thought of the school who denied him when I saw it. LOL!!

Cool, eaglemom10, my son will be in a Taos double! We’ll have to exchange their names at some point. They can tell each other about their crazy moms who met online!

Eaglemom…congrats on the decision being over…lol. (guess it goes without saying that I think he made the right choice…lol…) It is stressful during that time. I am sure you will be in an “at peace” period for awhile (at least until move in…lol)

Maine…that is really cool that both you and Eagle’s sons landed in the same place…congrats to both of you.

Thanks, y’all!! The waiting was the hardest part and I would have supported either decision. I can’t believe my sweet little bald baby is all grown up. sigh I feel great about his choices!
