College Ideas for student needs big merit/FA

For big merit scholarships:

But check college web sites to verify listings, since some have changed.

For need-based aid, run the net price calculator on each school’s web site.

Friend’s son was offered a full scholarship at Pitt for a 2330 not sure if full tuition or full ride. He did not take it for reasons of his own.

Many of the top schools and better schools have a few small free ride competitive scholarships, USC, Duke/UNC/WUSTL/Tulane/U of Miami/Vandy/BU but I have never personally met anyone that won one and this includes people who have won Intel (did not win the Robertson!) Note they all have early application dates.

Harvard offers great need aid (realize impossible to get into), I think a few others claim you will pay no tuition if your parents make under $100k and do not have tremendous assets.

Since you said you are open to any demographic, prefer the east coast, and need a full ride not just full tuition. Howard’s BSMd program should go on your list at least as a financial safety.

Howard scholarships are listed here (scroll down):

Looks like they are now back to being automatic-for-stats, but first-come-first-served. For a brief period of time, they were listed as competitive.

@ucbalumnus I’ll look into the automatic scholarships, but I’ve been warned about BS/MD programs

What have you been warned about BS/MD programs? Is it that no scholarships are available?

I wouldn’t get rid of Temple, since you should receive full-ride, although I’m not sure about the new SATs.

I see another post mentioned La Salle. I’m going to LSU in the fall, I think it’s an unnecessary safety for a 3.8/32 (unless you truly love it, you would get tons of merit).

Here’s a link with tons of options:

@hebegebe I’m mostly worried that the program will lock me in and prevent me from applying to other med schools

My S had 4.0/34. On the merit side, it got him:

Northeastern: $22/yr plus one time $6k

Tukane: $34k. He did not apply for the full. No think you have a good shot at it tho.

Miami OH: $22/yr

So not enough for you, but you might try for full at the first 2.

Look at the schools that pay 100% need. Your stats should get you into a few of them at the very least. I don’t see where you’ve mentioned what the family EFC is. Keep in mind that each school has a different idea what “need” is but for a family with $80K yearly income, some of them think its nearly the entire COA. Run your NPC for the 100% needs schools and see what comes up.
