College laptops?

I just ordered an Alienware M14x laptop (i7/12 GB RAM/750 GB/Nvidia GeForce GT 650M for you gamers :p) for college next year. Anyone with Alienware laptop, how heavy is the laptop? Do you think it's manageable to carry around? Because from the pictures, it looks pretty heavy!

What laptops do you have/are going to buy for college?

It depends on where I go. If I end up at St John’s, for just $400, I can get a Mac and that’s what I’ll do. If not, I’m taking my mom’s computer to college. It’s a Toshiba. My mom is a tech geek, and has told me it is essentially the next best thing (compared to Macs). I’ve used it a few times and it’s reallllly nice. It’s much faster than the HPs I’ve had.

It’ll be heavy, but manageable.

No idea what i’m getting next year. Probably will keep my Samsung Series 9.

My High School gives out Lenovo x201i’s

Paired with OneNote, they’re amazing machines. Extremely long battery life, pen input (with an eraser-thingy) turn around and snap down to lie flat, keyboard… OneNote takes a bit to learn, but once you do, it’s really great for taking notes.

Not exactly pretty, but otherwise, what’s not to like?

Google “MIT blogs laptop.” There are a few good posts out there that can help you out.

I’m planning to get a toshiba intel 3rd gen i7 processor, 750 gigs of memory , 8 gigs of ram, windows 8 computer but I’m going to remove windows from the system and replace it with OSx mountain lion I believe. Windows has a ton of problems; it’s systems always get slow and it runs a ton of junk in the background 24/7, Mac has the better processor but PCs are way more for much less: also I’m pretty sure the OSx is <$30 so it’s a pretty amazing deal.

OSX is proprietary software. It is illegal to download it on a PC, and it’s not nearly as simple as popping in an OSX disk. Macs and PCs share the same chip architecture, but that’s about it.

With those specs your computer should be fast for 3-4 years. If you replace it with an SSD, I don’t see it aging anytime soon.

I’m actually going to not get a computer, I’m going to get a tablet. The Asus transformer infinity. I can use it as a tablet and when I need to type I can put it on the keyboard dock, it adds 7 hours of life and has USB ports.

Thanks cc123 for the link.

Looks like it’ll be pretty fine, I’m planning to use digital textbooks for most of my books on my iPad to cut down the weight.

Well You can buy it online from the Mac store… And I already have one computer like the one I just talked about… So… Not so sure about what you’re saying

I wish I could get a Mac or the Surface…

I’ll probably get a Chromebook, and save money.
