College level precalculus vs. AP Calculus AB? (please help)

Hi so I have taken an incredibly rigorous - maybe the most rigorous it could get b/c it wasn’t just plug and chug but very in depth - college level precalculus course and I did pretty poorly (I got a 2+ and it was 2 quarters) it was but I had taken it with a course load worth of 23 credits this year. However, I want to take AP Calculus AB next year. Do you guys think I’m prepared? the precalulus course was an incredibly rigorous college course at a campus but how do you think that would play in my high school AP Calculus AB course?

Please help! Any advice is wanted

Not understanding the situation. Are you a dual enrolled HS/CCC student who will be taking HS classes in the fall?

If so, the answer most will probably chime with is: it depends. Course rigor varies too much to really give a real answer. Take an assessment test. (For example:http://mdtp.ucsd.edu/OnlineTests.shtml)

First of all, as a stranger who doesn’t know you at all, I’m not sure I can tell you if you are ‘ready’ for the next level math.

But more importantly, why is this in the UC transfer thread? Are you a CC student taking an AP class, or a HS student planning on going the CC -> UC route?

College math courses generally cover material faster than high school math courses (other than calculus BC taken after completing precalculus), since they typically cover in a semester what a high school math course covers in a year. So they may seem more rigorous due to the faster pace.

I assume perhaps you are looking to be a one year transfer, or just want to use your AP for CCC unit credit. If pre calc was hard you should get some outside help before you tackle AP calc. Try the Great Books courses with Prof Edwards. I understand he’s amazing. It goes on sale regularly.

@luckie1367 I think I posted this on the wrong thread because I’m neither but I don’t know how to delete a thread so I’ll have to keep it I suppose (I’m new to the cc community and this is my first thread).

Also, I meant “am I ready for AP Calculus AB?” as in based on what I have, do I seem prepared it it wasn’t already obvious

Thank you guys for the help, but let me rephrase my question so there is no confusion:

If someone gets a subpar precalculus grade, can they review precalculus over the summer before they go into AP Calculus AB and still do well?

@aimee1 I’d assume so. I never took pre-calc, did well in Honors Algebra 2 and went straight into AP Calc AB and did fine.

how on earth did this end up in the uc transfers forum hahaha

“Also, I meant “am I ready for AP Calculus AB?” as in based on what I have, do I seem prepared if it wasn’t already obvious”

I can read, thank you, and I didn’t misunderstand your post.

I have no idea what CC you went to, nor can I judge the rigorousness of the class.

You said you did poorly.

I have no idea how AP Calc is taught at your school. At my HS, it was the single-most difficult class any of my peers took. Many of them had aced Honors Pre-calc (which I grant, was not taken at a CC) and still failed out the first semester.

Now all of this is based on my own unique snowflake of a HS experience. Yours is likely completely different.

So I repeat, that as a stranger on the internet, I cannot tell you if you are ready for AP Calc AB.

@luckie1367 sure. I’m sure my situation is very different from yours and good point, sorry for asking and thanks for your insight/helpful advice but do consider that this is my first thread so I may have made a mistake as anyone might on their first try?

However thanks everyone, and @fncrane I saw the “New Discussion” button while I was reading a UC transfer thread so I think I accidentally clicked that, you live and learn I suppose.

also @luckie1367 you’ve also asked “does anyone know if passing pre-calc in HS could qualify someone for Math 3A (Calc)?” … in the UCLA thread…

^Thus didn’t you ask basically the same question as I? where my question was if someone failing pre-calc but reviewing it over the summer could prepare someone for AP Calc?

Also, I believe as a stranger on the internet, I cannot tell you if you are qualified for Math 3A

While I get that this is your first post, and I respect that you are learning, I do not stand for snarky responses that you have given me. All I did in my first response was try and help you, and to better understand your situation.

And I was asking about math 3A as SUBJECT CREDIT, not as ‘am I prepared for math 3A by taking pre calc in HS’. I was not asking the opinion of strangers on my abilitiy to do well in 3A.

Okay @luckie1267.

Wow.

Agreed., I’m not going to argue with a HS student, this will only descend into a disaster. Good luck in whatever you do

Nice edit taking out everything you just said.

If you have access to the class syllabus or even just a brief overview of the topics covered, that will likely give you better idea of whether or not you’re prepared as the rigor of the class will vary depending upon a variety of factors. Also, talk to others in your school to try to gauge the rigor and structure of the course.

What is the “drop” policy at your school? If you’re able to switch into a regular or “college-prep” calculus class, or even a similar course, try AP Calc out first and then switch later if you’re in over your head.

Assuming you’re a high school student, you might want to post in the High School Life thread, as you’ll probably yield more detailed responses: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/

@starkali oh I haven’t thought about the syllabus yet, that sounds like a pretty good idea. Unfortunately we can’t drop back to a regular class b/c thats the only calculus course. I think I might post there now that I know better about how these threads work, thanks for the advice!
