College List? English/Anthropology...

Hey. I'm a junior, and I'm working on/done with my college list, but I'd really appreciate some input. I'm thinking of majoring in either Anthropology or English, and I chose these schools before it occurred to me to factor in my interest in social sciences, so I may need to do a little reevaluation.

Top Two:
Brown- a bit of a dream school, but I wouldn't freak out (or be at all surprised) if I didn't get in. REACH.
Reed- Also a bit of a dream school, because I am incapable of decisions. Plus, it's in Portland, which is basically my version of Mecca. (Match)

The Rest:
Oberlin (Match)
Wesleyan (Match)
Bard (Match)
Sarah Lawrence (Safety)
Hampshire (Safety)
Skidmore (Match)

NO:
UMD College Park- my mom works there, and the prospect of free tuition makes my dad salivate a little. Forced to apply.

I'm not sure why I organized it like that. It just seemed logical. Anyways... What do people think? The reach/match/safety thing is probably completely inaccurate, and is mostly based on what people tell me. Some of the matches are probably high matches... Some of the safeties might be matches. I don't know. Do I need more safeties? Are there any other schools I should be considering? Should any of these be kicked out? Etc., etc., etc.

Male?

Deep Springs.

Nope. And even if I were, waaaaay too few students and waaaaaay too rural. Bennington got knocked off my list for the same reasons, and its student body has got to be at least 20 times the size of Deep Springs'... It is an interesting concept though.

Brown, Reed, Oberlin, Wesleyan, Hampshire and Skidmore each publish their Common Data Set on their web sites. Compare your profile to Section C of this data to get a rough reach/match/safety idea about yourself.

One thing you should be careful of though, even if you seem like your stats would "match" or be a "safety" for these schools, small liberal LACs like these sometimes have very tricky admission.

Most of the time it's not just about the numbers but also quality of essays, creativity, passion, etc.

I'm not saying you won't get in, but jsut be careful what you consider a safety! Sarah Lawrence, especially, is strange with admissions.

I would say you need more safeties and what you consider matches (like Oberlin or Wesleyan) would probably be reaches to just about anyone for different reasons.

Also, since you are a girl admission is more difficult in LAC. It sucks, I'm a girl too...but it's the truth!

Best of luck! I applied to a lot of those scools too, so feel free to ask me if you have any questions. (Bard, Skidmore, and Oberlin. My sister went to Sarah Lawrence.)

If you don't mind a larger school, look at U Arizona. They have one of the best anthro programs in the country by far.

vossron: yeah. I've done that, but I'm not actually sure how much it helps me. I've got the numbers down. I test well, so my stats are great-- my guidance counselor asked me if I had a life after she saw my transcript. But then again, I feel like there are so many people who have similar stats to mine that I have no guarantee of anything. My ECs are pretty good, but I haven't cured cancer or started a million dollar business or won a Nobel Prize...

mairoula517: Yeah. I think I'm kind of operating under the assumption that at least ONE of these places will take me. Generally I'm not big on the whole safety/match/reach thing (because I haven't been able to figure it out). It really didn't factor into my choosing schools at all, which is partially why I'm worried about having too few safeties. But eh. I'm counting on a good essay, honestly. Strike that. My essay will be AWESOME (that is, if I can think of something to write about). And yeah. All of these places are majority female, which is great. I'm very fond of my gender. I have it in common with a lot of my friends. But it might be a bit easier to get in without all the estrogen.

world changer: Not sure I could take it. I love anthropology, but big universities don't tend to give off the same sort of learning community vibes I get from LACs. And I just sounded like an aspiring psychic. Eh. Anyways, I'm not sure I could do Arizona either... I'm a bit of a statist, unfortunately, in that I show insane preferential treatment towards coastal states, followed by some select few interior states (exp. Ohio, Michigan) followed by everything else.
