College materials.

I am concerned about the things I should buy for colleges. I have read about it on some websites. I was hoping if some parents with experience can help me out. Please tell me about the things that such websites miss out on.

This is an extensive thread that started in 2005 so early posts may even be out of date for some things. Start towards the back of the thread for more recent lists. Your university should give you a pretty good list also. I wouldn’t buy too much until you are assigned to a specific dorm. That will determine a lot of what you need/can fit.

Too soon to think about college stuff, even if you know where you are going. Use your spare time to enjoy your final months as a HS student and childhood. If you must obsess about college look up the CC threads from the past few years as well as the above referenced one. Better to read a fun book or peruse many better websites to increase your knowledge base.

The best availability, prices and sales won’t start until May. And June/July/August are when all the stores have their widest range and best prices- “Back to School” for kids time is when you will find the best prices. An at home activity is to look around your house and make a list of the stuff you use. You will still need the paper and pens you use for HS.Also look at what your par4ents have in the house. Mundane things like band aids, just to get you started. Use your time to learn how to do your own laundry if you aren’t already doing it (a rich friend’s son told his mom how a fellow Stanford classmate didn’t know how to do this- even elite, rich kids do their own in the US). Learn to iron your shirts. Learn to cook simple things. Learn how to buy groceries. If you come from abroad you will be best off waiting until you arrive in the US to buy stuff. Colleges sponsor trips to Target and other department stores for kids to get things. Bed Bath and Beyond and other stores will have plans to buy online and pick up this summer.
