<p>Hello, all!</p>

<p>I am preparing for college auditions coming up this fall, and I am having a very difficult time deciding what songs I would like to sing for them. Most schools I am looking at require the basic two-song package: an uptempo song, and a ballad. One college I would like to apply to requires three songs, and another requires one of the songs to have been written before 1960. (Just so you know, I have a two-octave range from a low G-High G above middle C.) So I had a short set of questions about audition pieces:</p>

<li>I was Javert this past spring in my school's production of Les Miserables- are "Stars" and/or "Javert's Suicide" too overdone to be performed for college auditions? Or would they be acceptable to use if I were able to perform them exceptionally well?</li>
<li>Other possibilities I am considering include "If I Can't Love Her" from Beauty and the Beast, "On the Street Where You Live" from My Fair Lady, "If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof, "I, Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha, and "Falcon in the Dive" from the Scarlet Pimpernel. Are they too overdone? Or are they good ideas?</li>
<li>Do you have any other song suggestion for someone with my range that aren't overdone in college auditions? Especially songs from before 1960? And Uptempo songs?</li>

<p>I agree, I think you will get more help in the MT forum.</p>

<p>But for what it’s worth, if you have actually PLAYED the character (Javert) in an actual production of the show, then I think it’s not such a worry if the song (or monologue) is overdone. They can look at your resume and see you have actually played the role–which also means you have done a HUGE amount of character work on the part.</p>

<p>Do some more searching online about what songs are overdone. I suspect most of the songs you have listed under 2) are overdone.</p>

<p>Maybe ask your grandparents what some of their favorite musicals are, for some “before 1960” suggestions?</p>
