College needs a better system than SAT

It seems to me with the world of technology, there has to be a better way for Colleges to find out more about the students. Some people are waiting over a month!!! for a SAT score… Thats just stupid. All you tech gurus out there come up with something… SAT is a dinosaur

The new digital SAT will provide scores much more quickly.

ACT will die if they don’t at least match this change.

Why the rush? A month isn’t unreasonable unless you decide to take the test right before an application deadline. Everything in life doesn’t need to be instantaneous, imo

Indeed, the forum demographic that mostly takes the SAT and/or ACT early and often probably should not care too much about the speed of results. It is more likely that first-generation-to-college students in high schools where few go to four year colleges and overworked counselors are mostly focused on avoiding dropouts who may be finding out various college application items (including the SAT and/or ACT) at the last possible moment.

Where speed of results may matter more is for graduating high school seniors taking AP tests and then going to colleges where they may have to select courses before seeing their AP scores (so they do not know whether they would be allowed advanced placement then, so they may have to try to change later if their guesses are not correct).

Normal speed for Aug/Oct/Nov/Dec/March/May Saturday test dates is 13 days. June takes longer due to College Board’s standardizing the scoring of new tests.

College Board has been pilot testing a digital testing solution for quite some time. It will return scores in a few days.

June is an exception. I think that collecting paper forms from around the globe, scoring, validating and distributing them in 13 days, as is done every other month, is actually rather efficient.

Digital testing (already in use for School Day and pilot testing) will roll out in March internationally for the SAT, Fall 2023 for all PSAT flavors, and March 2024 in the US for the SAT.

And fwiw, colleges have many, many other ways to “find out more about” students. SAT is one piece of a puzzle with many, many pieces.

If you don’t like the SAT or ACT timeline…apply to one of the very many test optional colleges.

There is actually really no reason one can’t take the test, put the score card in a scanner and leave knowing their score. The technology is there for this. So other reasons must come into play like a bad question or other factors.

Correct. You could know your raw score right away but to determine the scaled scores CB needs to normalize the results.
