It seems odd to me that a southern school with 9,000 undergrads, doesn't have a football team. Is there any discussion about adding one? I think that this could be one of the reasons for the lack of male students. Also, as the new president of the university can attest, coming from Georgia, nothing gets the alumni money flowing like football.

Drop mens soccer, swimming, track and baseball, add womens field hockey or lacrosse, and they would have enough Title IX space for football. I think the state would allow CofC to share the Citadel's stadium. Even at the D1 (AA) level, football adds to the atmosphere of any school, including the Ivy league schools.

I know this is an old forum, but its an interesting discussion. As a CofC alum, I am all for a football team.

Jrbrown2008: CofC only has womens Track and Field, however they have Mens and Womens Cross Country.

TurtlePhobic: Title IX is an interesting argument. However, CofC only has 8 Mens sports, while they currently have 14 Womens sports so I dont think Title IX would get in the way of CofC starting a Football program. I also dont think CofC should be dropping any sports as you pointed out, the student body is quite large and can easily maintain the number of sports already in the queue, plus all the sports you mentioned, as is the case with all 8 Mens sports, they all have a Womens counterpart: Basketball, Sailing, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Swim and Dive, Tennis, and Baseball/Softball.

In addition, the Women of CofC also have Equestrian, Sand Volleyball, Track & Field, Court Volleyball, Cheerleading, and Dance Team.

Now, Im not a Title IX expert however I believe this array of Womens sports would accommodate not only Mens Football at CofC, but perhaps Wrestling and Court Volleyball (which I wanted to play) as well.

And as you pointed out Womens Field Hockey would be another excellent addition to CofC and perhaps even Gymnastics.
