college of chemistry breadth requirement

Can somebody explain to me the the CoC breadth requirement? thanks! :)

The CoC breadth requirements are probably the most generous ones here at at Cal.

For ChemE, you need 19 total units of humanities and social sciences. Within those 19 units, there must be an English R1A or equivalent reading composition A course (reading composition B courses are not required), an American Cultures course, and a two course sequence (one lower div and one upper div) in any humanities/social sciences department or in two closely allied departments. Aside from that, you can use pretty much any humanities or social science course at Berkeley. Most humanities/social science AP courses (like AP US History, AP English, AP Economics, AP US Government, etc.) and community college courses can also count for this requirement.

For Chemistry and Chemical biology, you only need 15 units of breadth, but you must take both Reading and Composition A and Reading and Composition B (not necessarily from the same department). Aside from that, you need 2 or more courses, one of which must satisfy the American Cultures requirement also. You also need to satisfy a foreign language requirement, which can be completed in high school, through AP credit, or by taking a second semester language course at Berkeley. There is no upper div + lower div series requirement. AP and Community College classes can be used here as well.

Check the CoC announcement if something is unclear: http://chemistry.berkeley.edu/student_info/undergrad_info/publications/chem_11_12.pdf</a></p>
