My daughter will be applying this fall for next year. I know some of the schools (Smeal & Engineering) are very competitive to get into. Yet, going undecided or some of the other schools are a little easier to get in. My daughter is interested in speech pathology which I believe is in the college of Health & Human Development. How tough is that school to get into?
If youre not applying for Smeal/a technical major, the school you apply to doesnt matter much. Most of the reason for denying people based on their preferred major is because of the amount of applicants they have for those majors. Speech pathology isn’t an incredibly popular major, and as such doesnt weigh very heavily in their decision. Not to mention, your daughter will more than likely change her mind at some point anyway, and the school knows that.
If youre worried about it, theres no shame in applying undecided. People in DUS (undecided) have the same options for majors as everyone else, and the advisers do a great job.
Thanks for your reply. She is actually decided on her major…long story. She definitely doesn’t want engineering and business. She has a 4.0 gpa and in the top 25% of her class. Just waiting on her SAT scores. We toured the school last November and fell in love with it.
I noticed in the acceptance thread the big difference in grades & sat scores. For Smeal & Engineering both scores for accepted students was high. But, for everyone else the scores were not as high.(not low…just not as high as the others.
Although engineering and Smeal are some of the toughest, main campus is competitive to get into no matter which major is applied for. Every year there are students who ought they were strong applicants who are surprised that they are accepted to main campus only if they start in the summer. Her SATs will figure significantly in her chances of acceptance. Penn State has a strong Speech Pathology program. As you know, a graduate degree is entry level for the field and Penn State grads seem to have good success with acceptance into graduate schools. Lucky her that she already knows what she wants to major in! Good luck. She’ll love PSU!
For what it’s worth…my daughter applied for fall or summer 2015 (DUS) with a 3.4 GPA and a 29 ACT. She was accepted for summer and before she even started she changed her major to the school of HHD. So, if for some reason she does not get in, ask to be reconsidered for DUS. But honestly, I think her chances are pretty good. Communication Disorders is not an enrollment controlled degree.
@zipbags my daughter just graduated from Communication disorders for speech pathology graduated with a 3.7gpa. Applied 11 grads school and got into 1 initially then a 2nd one in August since she was wait listed. Getting into a grad school for speech is extremely competitive. There’s a website called “grad school cafe” which shows some gpa’s of speech undergrads that were denied to speech schools. I think the supply hasn’t caught up with the demand since a few years back the field required a masters to practice. I was a bit discouraged that PSU fails to tell the student that. So from experience, although it’s a great field, be prepared to be challenged when it comes to applying for grad school a few years ahead and if she pursues speech pathology as her major she really has to kill it. It’s not unusual for somebody to not get into a grad school and be forced to take a year off then reapply. But as in my daughters case one acceptance is all she needed and can’t tell you how excited she was when that letter came in after so many denials. Good luck!!
Same stats as my S but he applied undecided engineering In the beginning of Sept. So frustrating not hearing anything. Would like to get some PSU clothes for xmas!
if I have a 3.3 GPA and a 29 act and my mom’s a high paying legacy what are my chanced of getting into health and human development with a major in kinesiology?
@shayyy123 Your ACT score is good. GPA on the low side. I know from what I have read it helps if you put you would do summer session. Did you put that? Good luck!!
@shayyy123 Not sure. My daughter applied for speech disorders. I always assumed that business, engineering & nursing were the highly competitive majors…But, who knows.
