Does anyone have any firsthand insight into these schools? My D liked them both a lot when we visited, but some online reviews have her concerned.

Thanks!

Could you elaborate more with concerns, programs you are looking at etc. My S and I looked at both schools several years ago, for K-Zoo, they had amazing science facilities as well just about any other LAC major. Their semester abroad program is very well organized and most students participate (this and their financial aid were the reason he did not attend). To us there were no obvious negatives,he just didn’t click with it. Wooster, was another school that appeared to have everything a great LAC needed but it just didn’t click, programs were excellent, people were very nice but it just didn’t grab him. He was looking for something with a more flexible program, newer theater (which ultimately didn’t matter) and great labs. He clicked at Allegheny College in PA. There were bad reviews written about the surrounding town, which improved over his four years and he made his own once he got there. You really have let your D follow her gut and the educational needs. It can be a scary process, good luck.

@murmur … she’s interested in neuroscience/psychology, as well as French. She loved both campuses, especially Wooster. The review she read about Wooster, a student complained that despite guaranteeing student housing, there weren’t enough dorms to go around, that people were crowded into singles or forced to get housing in town. The Kalamazoo concern she had was that professors were reluctant to hand out 4.0 grades, even if earned. She wants to go to graduate school, so grades are a big deal to her.

Kalamazoo has long had a great rep for having grads admitted to graduate schools. The CTCL website says that K “ranks 22nd in the nation among all colleges and universities for students ultimately earning a Ph.D.” This may be more important for your daughter than a fear that some profs may be fighting grade inflation.
