College Park/Baltimore Merger?

Thoughts on the possible merger of U of MD College Park and UMBC? How would it work, exactly? Would people apply and have a choice of which campus to attend?

At my high school, only the best and brightest were accepted to CP for the fall. Other kids who kind of slacked off or didn't take the hardest classes got into UMBC, no problem. I worked really hard to get into College Park, so I hope I don't end up with a degree that is worth less because of a merger with UMBC. I'm not saying UMBC isn't a good school, but right now, College Park is more prestigious. I hope it doesn't happen!

The merger is actually with UMB, not UMBC. I am not quite sure how it will work out. It seems that both administrations seem are for it though.

Thanks, Mddad. I didn’t know there are two separate Baltimore schools. I don’t understand how they would “merge,” but I guess we’ll see.

Since UMB is only research, professional, and graduate schools, it would be a perfect fit with the research oriented UMCP. The merger could be a real boost to future pre-law, pre-med students at UMCP.

With the campuses being separated by 45 miles, even with a merger, these 2 campuses would still maintain their individual “flavor”. A merger would work if the campuses were close enough so that one doesn’t have to drive 45-min to 1-hour, for example, to do a collaborative research project (how many days of the week can someone do this?). At the end of the day, I think the merger would be great if the Univ of MD “brand name” can be strengthened - but I’m not sure that a catchy merged name can be thought up that would decrease outsider confusion which already exists as evidenced by some of the posts on this thread.
