Does anyone know what specifically they are look for in the Essay? I know we are supposed to write about why we would be "a good applicant" for the program, but that is pretty vague. Any ideas? Thanks.

What essay are you talking about?

The Essay Topic is:

On a separate sheet of paper, please tell us why you would be a good applicant for the College Park Scholars program(s) that you have listed. This essay, along with your University of Maryland application file, will be used to make program admission decisions. Please type your name and date of birth on the statement.

Again, if you have any advice, that would be great! Thanks!

Isn't it a bit late? I know I sent mine in like.. last month. I just updated them with my recent accomplishments and what I'd bring to the scholars program.

Where did you get this essay topic? I am in the scholars program but I didn't get any additional information about it? can someone help me out?

The mailing just went out from UMD Scholars. Even though the program selection was online, if you haven't done that one yet (most people haven't), the one that is in the package is what they are referring to, I believe. We're OOS, and have not received the mailing yet.

You can get the essay prompt and form online... on the MDCP website. How long should the essay be?

I'm sorry but I don't see it on the college park scholars site. Do you have a link? Thank you.

The inventory and essay prompt are at http://scholars.umd.edu/admissions/Inventory.pdf

You are not late. But it is due Mar. 18 so you probably should get going. It says to do the essay on a "separate sheet of paper" so I would guess they are asking for a one-page essay.

The mailing that came also had a letter from Greig Stewart, the executive director, explaining the program. He says they reviewed 9,000 applications to identify candidates. He does not say how many have been invited.

An assoc director told us that there are approx 75 for each program.... 75 x 11???

Do you think I should contact maryland if I have still not recieved the college park scholars letter and who should I email?

If I am accepted as Honor Gemstone...do I need to do anything about it?

Smajo....D just received hers yesterday (in NC). Go to the Scholars webpage...there's a phone number there. That's how we first contacted them. Also, you could just use the online forms for selecting the program, etc., assuming your acceptance specifically said CP Scholars! The response has to be postmarked by 3/18/2009

Honestly, I would definitely just use the link: http://scholars.umd.edu/admissions/Inventory.pdf

and fill out the form. You should definitely also get a move on, you have just over a week!

Winner88 - Yes, you need to confirm that you will be entering the program - I believe you have until May 1 to do this.

Thanks. That means I can confirm to accept the Gemstone when I enroll to MD.
May 1 is okay...I thought I have past some deadline

Anyone heard any merit scholarship in addition to the B/K?

Dept of Ag and Natural Resources has offered some departmental $$, but that's all that I know of in terms of merit scholarships.

It seems to me that when D1 was applying 2 years ago, there was a separate form to return for Gemstone. (she politely declined Gemstone). Look at any Gemstone info they have mailed to you.
