@badgerfan10 Every discussion I’ve seen on CC says over and over “Fill out that housing agreement ASAP!” Don’t wait, they assign the rooms later but you want to be in the queue.

Does anyone have any information, experience, advice, etc. about the Cambridge community dorms? Are there some that you’d recommend over others, or are they all similar?

Thank you so much for those who answered my questions. Very helpful. Also I was wondering can I do the housing contract now even If i end up not going to MAryland? thank u

also how is the global public health program?

You should do the housing contract ASAP…no deposit required in case you change your mind

jsmallmom, my S was in cambridge scholars for two years. loved his hall mates and dorm friends. he was packed 3 deep in a double his first year, had no air conditioning, and found his door locked repeatedly when he needed to study. But there were always girls who were happy to have him study in their rooms. (He’s a very shy boy. Works for him, tho.) It was two good years for him, but he also liked living in a house off-campus his last two years. I think at Cambridge, other than with his two roommates, he found a supportive, nurturing, and dare I say loving community of bright, talented kids who liked to argue about everything. A good place for a nerdy, introverted, WofW junkie to start to break out of his shell. Might not be that way on your floor, but it was on his. Good luck.

@jsmallmom, there are 5 dorms in the Cambridge Quad - 2 are high-risers (Centreville and Cumberland) and the remaining 3 are low-risers. Like jkeil, my son was in a low-riser (Chestertown) and loved it! Great experience, great friendships. Basically, they are concrete and not attractive, but survivable and make for good stories as part of the freshman “experience” - upper class dorms are much nicer with options of semi-suite, suite and apartment style options.

The high risers have a/c and they are working on installing a/c in the low-risers in the coming years (not sure what the status/schedule is on that). Even without a/c in the individual rooms, the low-risers do have a large lounge that has a/c if they want to hang out there to cool off or study. The first few weeks of school are really the only issue with heat, and they all manage to survive a few weeks with just fans. You are assigned to a particular dorm based on the scholars program you select.

can someone tell be about the global public health, life sciences, and science and global change programs?

Here is the page with links to all the programs <a href=“The Scholars Programs | College Park Scholars”>http://www.scholars.umd.edu/programs
You can click on each program and it will take you to the home page for description of that program. On the left side are additional links for curriculum and other various things - be sure to click on them all to get as much info as possible. See if you like the choice of classes more in one program than another.

FYI, some of the programs are limited because of popularity. If they run things like they did two years ago, there will be an accepted students day for scholars (after you’ve already been assigned to a program) and you can see the programs when you go - they set up booths. So, if you find that you like a program better than the one you selected, you can always request to switch, as long as it’s not one of the limited programs like the Business one and the STS one…

thankyou:) are there any programs that r more selective?

I think they let you know on the interest inventory since you can only select one limited program (selective/limited same difference) and then you have to choose 2 alternates if I recall correctly. Just make sure you submit it on time though…the deadline is February 14th!!! http://www.scholars.umd.edu/prospective/invited-students http://www.scholars.umd.edu/prospective/interest-inventory

@bigbooklover ohhh ok… thanks!

Does anyone have experience with Arts scholars / what Bel Air is like? it’s my preferred scholars program but i haven’t heard too much about it

Bel Air is one of the low-risers, so more conducive to getting to know more people in your dorm.

what is the social and academic life at cp scholars like?

S found the dorm life terrific. Lots of late night discussions and pizza. People looking out for each other when one’s room-mates are not exactly matches. Groups of students studying together and playing together. End of semester orgies of pizza and MDew with all the money people had left on their terpsbucks. Like what you’d want it to be.

When and how will we choose the scholars program we want to join?

now. i already did…just go to their website then accepted students link then at the bottom of that page will be the inventory link
