Hey guys! I just wanted to start a thread for those accepted to the College Park Scholars Program at UMD. Has anyone received the decision which program they have been placed yet? When you do, let us know! Also, if you are already in the program, could you tell us about/ if you like it?

Great! I was just thinking of starting a thread! They said on an email or letter that they will have program decisions out “by March 5” and now it’s March 6… =_=

Do you have to apply to be Scholars? I applied as a transfer student to Chemistry LEP. Do they just look at your application and your stats and award scholars or is it a special thing only for incoming freshman?

I am not 100% sure about transfer students, but I applied for normal freshman admission and you do not have to apply, they just look at applications and select people who they want and notify you when you are accepted. It’s also a 2 year program for freshman and sophomores, so if you aren’t an incoming freshman, I am not sure if you can be considered. If you go to the college park scholars site, there is information on how to self-nominate yourself, which would be similar to applying to get in I suppose. I hope this helps.

My son was accepted into the Scholars program. I had hoped that this might have been on the strength of his grades and application which would then translate into some Merit Aid. I was very disappointed that he did not receive a letter. Any one else in this situation?

My daughter was accepted to scholars too but we haven’t received a letter about merit scholarships either, but we’re still hoping to get something.

I went to the Open House on Friday, March 8th. They said that this was the first year in a while that every student got into either their first or second choice. I got into my first choice, Life Sciences!

TrackdudMD, How did you find out which Scholars program you got into? Do they send and email? Do you check your account? I don’t think my daughter has heard yet.

eaglesmom09, I found out when I went to the Open House. We got more information about each individual program and the scholars program as a whole, we toured the scholars dorms (some nicer than others… Cumberland being the nicest), and then we came back into the community’s gathering hall, I guess you’d call it, and we found out the programs that we got into there. But on the scholars website***, it says that we should receive mail from them between now and the 15th. So anywhere between tomorrow and Friday, we should be getting something in the mail.

My son got a letter today telling him he got into the Business, Society and Economy (BSE) program. This is also the only school we didn’t receive any merit aide from. However, this is where he wants to go.

My D got a letter today that she was accepted into the Public Leadership program, her 1st choice. She also did not receive any merit funds from UMD, but even with her other scholarship offers from other schools (Pitt, UConn, and UDEL), UMD being in-state is still the best value and her first choice.

S got his letter today… Environment, Technology and Economy (ETE), his second choice. He really just wanted Business, Society and Economy (BSE), but had to put down a second choice. Disappointed, kind of took the thrill out of being a College Park Scholar. That, in conjunction with merit of only $2K/yr for OOS is making MD look much less enticing at the moment compared with other options.

@lane123 - We are instate also, and yes with merit aide from Pitt, Loyola, Hofstra and Drexel, U of MD is still cheaper and it his first choice for where he wants to go. So it’s a win win for us. BSE…was his first choice.
