College recommendations for son graduating entering Fall 2018

Hi. We have come up with the following list of colleges for my son entering Fall 2018.

My son has the following stats:
93 GPA (IB Diploma Candidate)
1540 SAT
790 - Math II
740 - Literature
640 - Chemistry
No sports, intensely involved with the Robotics Team, lead CAD and engineer.

At this point he is undecided, maybe secondary school teacher, Architecture.

For private schools he would need substantial merit aid to attend.
Our EFC will be about 40k.
We will have two in college for Fall 2018.

So far we are considering:
Rice - has two sisters currently attending, hoping it will help with the subpar GPA, intends to ED
Providence, Fordham - probably can only attend with substantial merit aid
University of Pitt.
SUNY Geneseo, Binghamton, Buffalo

Any ideas for other colleges we should investigate?

Thanks in advance.

U of Cincinnati

If it’s FIRST Robotics, then WPI works closely with FIRST, has a robotics major, and offers scholarships specifically for FIRST team members:

Also look at Bucknell:

I forgot to add - NO engineering, he says he is sure about that!

It’s tough to give you a recommendation, because you haven’t provided any criteria. You’ve offered no geographic preference, no preference for major, and no religious preference. The schools on your current list have little or nothing in common. The only point that stands out is the interest in robotics, but apparently that is not a guide to college preference either. There is nothing to base a recommendation on here.

If you want low cost, then look at your state schools – but you haven’t indicated your state of residence. You seem to be looking at SUNYs, so maybe its NY, in which case Stony Brook seems like a possibility.

Thx for the reply.

Let merry to clarify my request. No geographic preference, no religious preference, prefer a school above 4000 undergrad, we are NY residents hence the SUNY’s.

As stated above undecided but is leaning towards secondary ed or architecture.

I guess I am hoping for suggestions of schools where CC parents have been granted substantial merit aid given his stats.

U of Alabama - Huntsville is a small nerdy state university in far northern Alabama. Not well known nationally, but actually has stronger stats than the flagship Alabama campus. Definitely comparable to SUNYs. Not sure how your GPA converts to a 4-point scale, but a 3.5+ with a 1540 SAT equals 100% tuition waiver. If the GPA is 4.0+, then it’s 100% tuition plus free on-campus housing.

If you were willing to go <4000 students, then another direction for good financial aid would be a well-endowed liberal arts college. The LACs would be impressed by the SATs, they have no problem at all with “undecided” students (LACs typically don’t expect students to declare a major until the end of sophomore year), and they produce lots of teachers (at both the secondary and tertiary levels). LACs would be intrigued by your son’s robotics experience; they know that robotics kids are smart and motivated, yet robotics kids rarely apply to LACs, because most LACs don’t have engineering. So your son would stand out in a LAC applicant pool.

Thx for the suggestions, will definitely check out UA.
I have been trying to get him to take a second look at the LACs. Hopefully he will.
