College says "we will only consider them if they strengthen your application" for SAT subject tests

I was looking at Washington university in St. Louis’ admissions process. I found their SAT subject policy odd

“Washington University does not require SAT Subject Tests (formerly SAT II: College Board Achievement Tests). However, if you do take them and submit your scores, we will only consider them if they strengthen your application.”

Is that true? Like if I get a the lowest score possible they will really turn a blind eye? Does this mean that they run your test scores and gpa through a formula to make some sort of admissions index?

I think what they mean is, they are not going to look at you unfavorably if your scores are not the best. Essentially, whatever score you send will only be considered if it is a positive addition. I do not think they run it through an index.

I would only submit them if they are strong.

I have spoken to other top school AO’s who have similar policies. Basically the rule of thumb is: if you get 700 and over on a Subject Test, send it. Otherwise, don’t.

They are trying to be nice, not to burden applicants. 1) they don’t want applicants to feel compelled to take SAT2s. WUSTL is perfectly confident admitting students with only SATs or ACTs

However, 2) if you happen to have a negative blip (say a B- in AP Chem) and happen to sit for the SAT2 Chem and bust a 720, by all means send it in to show strength in that area.

No need to overthink this. In general, they don’t want kids knocking themselves out on the SAT2s

They’re trying to not make students freak out by thinking “recommended” equals “required.” It just means, if you do well, you can send it, but if not, don’t worry about it. They’re telling you the SAT IIs will only help you.
