Are SAT IIs really "strongly recommended"?

Hi all--
First post... long time lurker.

I spoke with the admissions office today to clarify need to take SAT IIs if Stanford is the only school to which they would be sent. The officer was clear that the ACT was completely fine and lack of SAT IIs would NOT work against an application. The language on their website says "recommended" but the word "strongly" is nowhere to be found although I see from a CC search of past years that it was used in Stanford's application literature.

The officer went on to say that SAT IIs would only be used to strengthen an application and poor or mediocre scores would not work against the applicant. I find this a bit hard to grasp but who knows...I imagine that all things being equal, those with strong SAT IIs would have an advantage.

I've read about a few experiences of people being accepted without these tests but would love to hear other examples. The November test is pending although it would mean missing a state XC meet and not really being timely enough for EA.

FWIW: ACT=33-writing 10; Never taken SAT I.

Thanks everyone!

Testing Requirements : Stanford University

"SAT Subject Tests are recommended but not required for admission. We recommend taking at least two SAT Subject Tests, as such information will assist us in our evaluation process. Applicants, however, who choose not to take SAT Subject Tests will not be at a disadvantage in the admission process."

So pretty much they can be a boost, but not taking them won't work against you. You just don't get the boost. ACT score seems fine. No need to take the SAT Reasoning, but you may want to consider taking some SAT II"s, especially if you know you can do well.

take the SAT 2s if you can... but the state XC meet is so much more important lol. and yeha nov is not even in time for EA so yeahhh

Applicants must submit scores from all SAT tests (including Subject Tests) taken or all ACT tests taken. Applicants cannot elect to "hide" any scores with either testing agency.

I don't know how Stanford thinks they can actually enforce this "rule." They have no way of knowing if you submitted all ACT scores or not.

Sry, that's just something I thought I'd bring up.

If you do take the SAT II's and only make 680/690 would that hurt your application or help it ?

@ Jben, I don't think they count SAT II's against you, so those scores probably wouldn't help or hurt.

@ OP, for stanford, you may want to consider applying RD as having a stronger application RD is better than a weaker one EA.
