College Search Tools

There seem to be many basic questions from students looking for college lists that match their interests, so I'm posting sources that have been helpful to us. (This will be elementary to many CC posters...).

Princetonreview.com - the Counselor-o-Matic feature can provide a list of matches based on GPA, SAT, location, major, etc. We've found, however, that their rank of Reach, Match and Safety schools are inaccurate; some of the matches are really reaches for my son.

Ruggs recommendations - provides lists/rankings of colleges by major. Available at many libraries or in school guidance offices.

Once you have your list, narrow it down by looking at and integrating info from the following:

US News & world report for statistics

Studentsreview.com - comments from students on schools, however this should not be used alone; see if comments match up with what you hear from other sources.

**************.com - requires a subscription, but gives detailed info and student comments on many facets of a school, as well as info on size, etc.

Other Books - Many books are available in libraries, guidance offices, etc. Or you can buy them. We like Insiders Guides (although can be out of date), Fisk guide etc.

FYI, we have a subscription to college *******, it was blocked out in previous message

I wonder if the one that's blocked out is College *******...when my older brother was applying for college and was in the USNews.com forums (they used to be good then), he said they spammed the forum all the time, and did fake reviews on Amazon. Duh.

I'd heard of all of those except Ruggs. I will have to check that out, thanks.

Petersen's launched a new site a while back that has a lot of good info too. And www.ratemyprofessor.com is hilarious!

haha, I think we did mention the same company since mine was blocked out too!

I really like the princeton review. They're the only reason I got a good sat score, and they have good college information. They need to get more in depth about art schools though.
