Hi,

I am now a senior now in my school and I am going to be choosing colleges. I have to take a survey for my school and it asked what kind of social environment I wanted.

Unfortunately, I don't know what each one means college-wise. Can someone please tell me? Thanks!

Conservative
Moderate
Liberal
Experimental

Conservative:

Politically conservative or, more likely, a bit apathetic (where students hold conservative beliefs, but it is not an integral part of campus life with rallies and activism and such). Students are likely to be upper-middle class and white. Business is likely to be a popular major. Greek life may be strong. Likely to be a bit preppier than most. See: Vanderbilt, most of the southern schools.

Moderate:

Students come from backgrounds from “moderately liberal” to “moderately conservative.” Again, activism is likely to play a low part in day to day campus life. Students are likely wrapped up in other pursuits, probably pre-professional but not always. See: Colgate, UChicago (for those wrapped up in academic, not pre-professional, pursuits).

Liberal:

Most of the best colleges in the United States. Most of the Ivies. As such, there’s a lot more diversity in types of liberal colleges. There are the non-diverse ones like Bard, and diverse ones like Stanford. Activism will play a big role on campus, although there is probably a strong-for-its-size conservative presence, too (less so at LACs. I am of the impression that there are approximately 2 conservatives at Wesleyan). They can be preppy (Amherst) or hip (Berkeley) or surfer-filled (New College of Florida) or so big that there’s no one over-arching feel (probably also Berkeley) or anything you want, really.

Experimental:

I don’t know whether this means the student body is really really liberal (Wesleyan) or whether it means the Weird Colleges like Deep Springs, College of the Atlantic, etc. The ones that are significantly different from other colleges in style of teaching, that may have eliminated grades, etc.

Thank you very much! This helped a lot!

Conservative: greedy and war-loving
Moderate: boring
Liberal: over-sexed and godless
Experimental: crazy
