does anyone know what the social scene is like at wesleyan? im just trying to figure out what kind of people go there...

Wesleyan is probably the most progressive, most politically active, and least preppy of the major East Coast LACs. If you're interested, you might also take a look at Vassar, Oberlin, Swarthmore, Bard, and Bates. Most of the students come from major blue state strongholds like New York, New England, the Upper Midwest or California, but, even the southerners tend to be Democrats. Social life revolves around dorm and house parties on the weekend and the library which is comfortable and pleasant even when you're not studying. Frats exist, but, are mostly popular among athletes; keg parties have largely been driven underground due to heavy enforcement of under-21 drinking laws; pot is probably easier to find on an average weekend than a case of Coors (okay, maybe not easier--but, as easy.) It's hard to typecast everyone except to say that there probably is a general aversion to George Bush, bureaucracy of any kind, and to nine o'clock classes. A lot of very smart people wind up at Wesleyan (it is the major back-up school for Brown applicants) and an amazing number of them have acted or sung or done stand-up comedy professionally; home-grown entertainment is very big at Wesleyan which may explain why so few people seem to leave on the weekends.

would you say that an open minded yet somewhat conservative student, looking for all types of art enrichment, music, film etc. could be comfortable in an environment like this? Wesleyan is often portrayed as the place where sexual experimentation, liberal political views and piercings abound. We visited and felt there was a slight trend of accepting yet middle of the road kids visiting. The academic side of Wes. is often overshadowed by the open minded student body. While it is fine to seek new ideas and tiptoe into various forms of experimentation in college, and should be encouraged... is the environment or at least the reputation of the school hard to take at times... ?

im just nervous because when i went there i loved it but my brothers friends who are all in college say that i wouldn't fit in there. i guess i am the stereotypical preppy girl and what they say made me worried

asillad - yes, I think that a person can be open-minded intellectually and still be personally conservative at Wesleyan. Ninety percent of the faculty would fit that category, and in many ways they still set the pace at Wesleyan. In fact, I think there's probably an even better word for the same thing: it's called tolerance.

crazy242 - take a look at the frosh facebook and you'll see a lot of preppy kids. I was amazed to come across a photo of the women's varsity basketball team the other day--you'd think they'd all just parachuted in from Vail, CO for the weekend; you'd never know that they'd just beaten a predominantly minority team from Staten Island on their way to the NCAA DIII championships. Wesleyan peep don't care what you look like, they care what you think; they care what you can do.

alright thank u.. sorry i probably sounded superficial but i think its important to know that im going to be able to find at least some kids like me

And I'm sorry if I came across as pompous :p

what about someone who doesn't like drugs or drinking? where can someone like that live--what dorms? i'm not a party person, is everyone getting drunk and high in their free time and on weekends, or do people just hang out too?
