I have recently been asked to help a senior student in my city who is a parent of a 1 year old, but is very motivated to go to college. She is a fairly strong student with a 3.7 GPA, many AP courses and a 26 ACT. She is a minority, first generation applicant. Does anyone have any suggestions for schools. She likes Wash U, and has met with their admissions rep, Boston University and Emory. These seem to be reaches to me, but I am looking for other college choices.

I know there are people with great ideas here!

Thanks.

Does she have shared custody of the child? Is she legally allowed under the custodial agreement to leave her current local area?

Yes. She can leave the state with the child to attend school.

Wouldn’t child care logistics while she is in class be a significant factor? Being near willing relatives (child’s grandparents, child’s father?) could help.

Endicott College in Beverly, MA has a program for single school age parents. Endicott is certainly not of the same caliber as the schools mentioned by the OP, but perhaps there are other schools out there with similar program.

The program at Endicott was recently written about in the Boston Globe (I think). It includes housing and other support services.

There should be a number of universities with child care services available to undergraduates with young children. It will require a bit of researching and some phone calls to explore the options. For example, I did a quick google search which brought up a terrific website for the University of Utah Childcare Coordinating Office which outlined financial help options: [Child Care Office - The University of Utah](http://childcare.utah.edu/finances/index.htm) not far behind on the google search entries were University of MN, U of Mich, Wayne State, Towson, etc.

Here’s the info for Boston University: <a href=“Children's Center”>Children's Center;
