Hey, I'm about to be a senior in high school and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on colleges I should look into. I have a 3.83 Unweighted GPA, a 32 ACT composite with a 34 on Math, English, English/Writing combo with an 11 on the essay, 32 reading, and 28 Science. My school only allows AP classes junior year and I took 2, Chem and Euro. My school also offers Seminar courses which they say are equivalent to AP's of which I also took 2. Next year I plan on taking AP Bio and AB Calc with 3 Seminar courses.
My EC's include 11 years of children's choir in which I have led the young men's tenor section for the past three years. I have played Ultimate for three years and will play next year, I was a founding member of the Model UN Club my freshmen year through which I have attended three conferences. I am in a swing dance troupe going on my 3rd year in which we perform at Veterans' halls and in many performances around the Atlanta area. I have also participated in 7 musicals since my freshman year in high school. Aditionally, I am nearly fluent in French and studied in a French high school last summer for three weeks. I was nominated for the Governor's Honors Program through my school, which can only give out two nominations a year total for all subjects. I have over 100 hours of volunteer experience through meals on wheels and a service project in Tennessee. I worked for four months last summer and into September at a local cafe and this Summer I turned down the job to be a research assistant to a professor in History at Emory. (I plan to major in History.) Finally, I have worked through Planned Parenthood at a program called Teen Action Group that educates at-risk youths about safe sex and healthy relationships.
I will have good teacher recs coming from one teacher who has taught me for two years and was my advisor, and from another in the history department who I will have had twice starting next year. My essays will be very solid. I would be able to afford college without any financial aid or loans, I live in Georgia. For undergrad, I would prefer suburban or urban and preferably north/ east coast and maybe california. Chicago would also be great for location.

So as I kinda said in there I'm looking to major in History so any colleges with good History programs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

For Chicago, your stats are good enough to give you a chance at UChicago or Northwestern, but they both will still be incredibly hard to get into. The 2013 acceptance rates were 8.8% at UChicago and 13.9% at Northwestern. The fact that you don’t need financial aid will help.

For East coast and CA, there are tons of great schools you would have a good chance at. It really just depends on whether you want small or large, diverse university or liberal arts focus.

Thanks for the input! I’d prefer liberal arts focused colleges. Schools already on my list include Tufts, Wesleyan (Legacy and mom is extremely involved with the school), Northwestern and possibly UC Berkeley. I was looking for a few more match/safeties

Shepherd University has a very strong History department. (West Va. State LAC)

Cool thanks for the input

Macalester, University of Rochester. Possibly Pitzer if it’s the kind of school that appeals to you–admissions rate is low but that may be more a question of them being very holistic in admissions (and Pomona, though a reach, may be of interest to you).

Great thoughts- Thanks!

any other suggestions? maybe even some reaches I haven’t considered?

If you want a chance to practice your French there is McGill in Montreal. The university is English but the city is French. You mentioned California, so any of the UCs would be an option.

History is a core subject so most really good colleges and universities have good history departments. If I were you a would browse through a good guide book such as the Fiske Guide, and use the search tool such as the one here on CC to come up with suggestions for your gpa/test scores, location etc. Then research their history departments…
Haverford, Brandeis, Wellesley (if you are female), BC, GWU. Have you considered any Ivy League schools as reaches?

Haverford was probably one of my tops when I saw it. I’m male so Wellesley isn’t an option haha. Yes I really liked Brown and will probably apply just to see what happens

another 2 page bummppp

Rice, USC, Boston College, Ohio State, (Almost every ‘Major State University’), U of Illinois Champaign-Urbana - just a few that come to mind. If you look at US News, they have a ranking of History departments and you will find that other than the ‘Ivies’, most of the list is filled with ‘University of …’.
