QUESTION: St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, encouraged his followers to live their lives in the service of others. How do you plan to serve others in your future endeavors?
Even the simplest smiles and laughter from genuine happiness are irreplaceable. Whether the ecstasy is from a new relationship with a stranger, a joke, or a random act of kindness, I desire to live a selfless lifestyle to serving others through the medical field and leaving a positive impact on my community.

"Throughout my adolescent years, I have been exploring numerous fields from politics to medicine to identify which area I am best suited in. However, after my best friend passed away in the seventh grade from battling Leukemia for three years, I realized I wanted to pursue a career that allows me to serve children and the community for their benefits. I was devastated when I first heard the tragic news; however, that expanded my desire to be involved in the medical field and reach out to children and their families who also struggle with psychological, physical, or societal conflicts.

I began by serving in the children’s ministry at my own church. I became involved in several events such as the October Harvest Festival, Christmas Gifting, and Homeless Ministry; all which focused on spreading God’s love through our acts of kindness like leaving a bag of gifts on the church neighborhood’s homes or serving food to the homeless in downtown San Jose. We went out of our comfort zones to provide the most support and assistance we could to see changes in people’s lives. As I got more involved, I began to feel a growing passion rather than obligation to serve others. Seeing the genuine smiles, joyous tears, and laughter from children and adults gave me happiness and motivation to continue contributing my time and efforts into helping my community.

Following St. Ignatius Loyola’s footsteps, I want to embrace my passion and God’s plan for me through the domestic and international programs offered in Boston College. Through the opportunities available at Boston College, I want to further my knowledge on Leukemia and other chronic diseases, and go on medical mission trips to third world countries. As a pediatrician, I would use the opportunities to provide a positive influence and immediate care for the growing youth worldwide, and to inspire them to pursue their greatest dreams. I hope to soar like an eagle through my hardships to make a positive difference in the lives of others."
