college textbooks

Hey! I wonder where do you usually get your textbooks? Would you suggest buying new textbooks (outrageously expensive compared to college texts in China) or buying second-hand ones (which might be )? Thanks.

bigwords.com

I get all my textbooks by searching through there.
I also usually get 2nd hand. Because it's usually cheaper. I think the only reason to get a new book is if that book suddenly came out with a new edition the year u need it.

That and paperbacks. Paperbacks are usually far less expensive and the price of a used one compared to a new one is relatively the same.

I usually search through 2 or 3 sites like the one mentioned above (by ISBN) and half/amazon

and what he said about paperbacks is true, I got an international edition paperback of the stewart 5e book for around 30 bucks shipped

they sell both new and used in the bookstore also (prices are on the bookstore's website)

The lovely thing about bigwords.com is it searches through sites like half.com/amazon.com too.

What are the other sites you search through, out of curiousity?

honestly I don't really remember - they were metaquery type sites like the one you mentioned

like these:

http://www.abebooks.com/
http://www.campusbooks.com/

etc

the scheduler at www.tcpulse.com has comparison shopping from many book sources including cmu bookstore.

There is also misc.market, a mailing list where stuff is sold, including textbooks. These you can buy from other students, basically arranging a time to meet.

With over 30 online site selling used textbooks, another dozen offering text book rentals and now a handful of sites offering e-books only way to find the cheapest without spending hours searching online is to use a price comparison service like the ones mentioned above or Cheap-Textbooks.com

It is also important to know that the online prices change with inventory levels. The cheapest site today may not be the cheapest site next week. You really need to use one of these online services to shop informed.
