College Thought

How would colleges view an applicant who has a relatively low UW GPA but a high weighted GPA with test scores? Basically, how frowned upon is a low UW gpa think A- range? Thanks

That’s a version of the classic question, “Is it better to get an A in a college prep class or a B in an AP class?” The answer is inevitably that is better to get an A in an AP class.

An A- UW GPA is not “low”, though. Other than as a point of comparison within your own school, colleges won’t use weighted GPAs against their larger pool of applicants because each high school “weighs” differently.

I agree that A- isn’t low. AP grades also don’t always reflect knowledge. I’ve taken online AP classes and gotten A’s and flunked the AP test while getting A-'s and doing amazing on AP tests. Colleges will look at a lot of factors, so don’t worry too much about an A-.
