College TO-BRING List

Fellow CAL-ers:
Let's start a list of college materials that you guys are packing for move-in day:

These are all the items I have in mind right now:

Notebooks
Clothes(how many sets though?)
Pencils/Pens/Erasers
Detergent
Earplugs
Ipod
Laptop
Cell phone
stuffed charizard

and... that's it. i'm sure there must be more, but i just can't think of any at the moment

PLEASE ADD TO THE LIST if you have suggestions!

I forgot to add water. I dunno how this is gonna work out though, b/c I can’t keep refilling the same H20 bottle over and over again cuz it gets that “old water bottle smell” after a while. But I also dont wanna keep rebuying water bottles b/c it’s too costly.

Any suggestions? Maybe bring a cup or something?

Have you ever seen those plastic or metal reusable water bottles? They sell them pretty much everywhere… Sports stores, Target, bookstores. They’re convenient, portable, keep you from buying water bottles, and they’re eco friendly because you’re not wasting plastic on disposable bottles! A lot of people I know recommend Klean Kanteen but there are cheaper versions at many stores.

Will probably snag one free during Caltopia

My mom plans to hide 2 cases of water bottles in my room LOL… I know tap water is the same at bottled water… but I’m an evil, environment hating person, ok?!

My TO BRING List (I’m a girl and I don’t feel like saving this in word):

 • tooth brush & toothpaste & FLOSS
 • face wash (includes toner & cotton pads)
 • make up & make up wipes
 • shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and a loofa
 • pencil case with 500 billion pencils and erasers because people steal them from me
 • Jansport backpack to stuff everything inside
 • a safe (my mom INSISTS… she wants me to lock up my laptop if i ever leave the room oo)
 • deodorant, laundry detergent, fabric softener
 • phone, charger, and earphones
 • bedding
 • clothes (I’m not bringing “sets” oo)
 • shoes. I want to buy a pair of rainboots. Someone told me it rains a lot?
 • umbrella if it does rain a lot
 • hangers to hang up my clothes
 • contact case and solution
 • Mr. Teddy

Do you think we’ll need to bring bath towels?

My roommate is bringing one of those pitchers with a water filter which I think is pretty smart.

cantsaywho - make sure the safe you bring is itself fastened down and not easy to just pick up and stroll out with.

The most that people typically do is put a laptop out of sight in the room, but for the most part the only risky spot is to leave it unattended in common areas. Also, be subtle about carrying it around outdoors - don’t have an obvious computer bag, don’t carry it out and visible - inside the backpack is perfect.

I’m in Foothill. Do you think it’ll be that bad with the stealing? I mean if my stuff did get stolen, I think I’d be able to figure out the culprit pretty easily? Thanks for reminding me to put my safe under something heavy so people wouldn’t be able to walk off with it! xD

“umbrella if it does rain a lot”

I would bring three: one gets stolen at the dining commons, one breaks on a particularly rainy/windy day, and the other is a spare. Also, don’t skimp out on rainboots. Wearing soggy shoes to lecture is a real downer.

If you’re worried about having your laptop stolen in your dorm, you should consider a laptop lock for your desk.

Alarm clock - or you can use your phone
Shower sandals
set of utensils
laundry supplies
bed sheets
towels
medicine or supplements if anyone needs them
container for showering supplies
first aid kit

btw cantsaywho, what kind of safe are you buying?

Second the laptop lock idea. I know some people who’s comps were stolen freshman year (mostly in Clark Kerr, ground floor), and the locks really help.

Umbrellas/rainboots are really important too, it starts to pour at the end of October and continues right into finals. On and off really, but wet socks are the worst.

One thing that’s also really useful is a whiteboard and a tackboard, for keeping track of to-dos and staying organized.

Get a laptop lock and secure the stuff to your desk or bed. The odds of it being stolen even unsecured are quite slim, and a safe is going beyond overkill. Just make sure it’s a good lock.

Sleep Mask. I know it sounds stupidly paranoid, but you will not regret bringing one.

Laptops should ONLY be transported in a laptop backpack, honestly. They’re better than laptop cases just as a baseline, and if you’re moving around late at night, you’re much less likely to get any unwanted attention for it.

Also, Foothill is pretty damn docile.

Well… from [Living at Cal - Welcome to Cal , Move In](http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/welcome_to_cal.html#need_for_room) it says:
• Extra-long, twin size sheets (80")
• Towels and wash cloth
• Pillow and pillow cases
• Blankets, comforter or bedspread
• Telephone
• Clothes hangers
• Desk lamp (NOT HALOGEN)
• Key or combination lock
• Shower sandals
• Plate, cup and a set of utensils
• Bathroom supplies (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, etc.)
• Laundry supplies (basket, detergent, fabric softener, etc.)
• Umbrella
• Alarm clock
• School supplies (backpack, notebooks, binders, paper, pencils, pens, erasers, ruler, etc.)

If you really want (kinda last minute), I have a 3 page list of items that my friend forwarded to me. Lots of little things that you won’t think of until you’re already there.

@crystal, please do share the 3 page list! I want to see so can you please post? Thanks.

don’t get overly obsessed with every possible future need. There are drugstores, supermarkets, all sorts of shops near the university. You don’t need to bring along supplies for uncommon situations when the products are relatively inexpensive and easy to get. Amazingly, you can buy BIC pens and Chapstick and staples and so forth quite easily. Save your space for things you will need every day or that are relatively expensive and hard to find.

I was going to ask about that - what stores are within walking distance?? CVS?? Supermarket?? Target??? (I can dream, right?) :-)

There’s a Walgreens right off campus on Telegraph, and CVS down on Shattuck. You can take a bus to the Safeway on College (10 mins), and the Res Halls typically organize a trip to Target on Monday or Tuesday :)

Not too bad… Thanks. I’m starting to get nervous. He’s my youngest and he is going the farthest away. I’ll be the one in the really dark glasses on Saturday. hahaha

Target used to be right on the BART line until they moved it. :(

Yes, bath towels – 2 at least. Bring plastic hangers. Altho if you forget stuff, you can buy most of what you need at Walgreens.
