College too easy?

Well isn't that just arrogance, a form of stupidity?

It is obvious that these courses will be easier than the upper-level courses, but what sort of difficulty is expected in the intro bio/chem courses?
Expect harsh curves and being tested on small details (mostly in bio for the latter).

actually pre-med is quite easy compared to most pure sciences and engineering. I know a lot of people who come out with 4.0 who never study nor go to class.

And I know that's not the norm. And that they do study but want people to think they don't. And they won't have a 4.0 for long.

Also, "premed" is not a major so you can't really compare it to other majors. A premed can major in communications and as long as he/she takes the required premed classes, can apply to med school. Easy way to get a high GPA right there.

Or a premed can major in biology, chemistry, physics, math, engineering, etc as long as he/she takes the required courses. I assure you that it's not very possible to do this easily and that it takes more work to get a good GPA. In such a case, a premed will have to work harder than most people because he/she does not just want to do well... the premed needs to do well and get a high GPA.

3togo, just started at cornell-glad to hear the first round of prelims have been easy, bc I'm way behind in my bio and chem readings. Taking AP Chem was really helpful, I've pretty much been spaced out the entire first couple of weeks during the stoichiometry, etc.

Yeah, our first chem lab was a joke- measuring densities, and we've been doing balancing equations, so as you can imagine, my books have been collecting dust while I've been doing just about anything else. However, you need only to walk through the bookstore to give yourself a wake up call. I see all those upper level chem books and shudder.

yeah i took AP and IB chem in high school and so far i could have skipped every chem lecture and discussion...all i need to do is read the book to refresh my memory...if you had AP bio, chem or physics in high school the general classes will be cake

^just wait...just wait. I was an arrogant dude, had a 3.9 my first 39 credits, then BAM...I was in a class that had 160 students to start with, only 55 passed, 10 of whom are grad students, as it is a first year grad level micro course.

some of you are going to get a harsh wake-up call at some point.

Major might have something to do with it, but I've always said high school is harder than college. College isn't as soul crushing as high school because you can choose what you want to learn and there is much more freedom socially and academically. High school is all about someone else telling you when to go to school, when to leave, etc.

Also, there isn't any pressure about having finish in four years. It's about FINISHING. There are people there in year six, and some in year four. There are some going back to school after 10+ years and some right out of high school.

I'm not doing a joke major like philosophy
Scientific Empiricism would eat you alive.

Yeah. It's like this, there isn't a ton of money waiting for you once you graduate in disciplines like English and Philosophy, but we need to stop correlating relevance with the median entry-level salary of certain majors.

As far as taking a long time to finish it really depends on the school. Many schools will hurry you through so at most you take 5 years.

high school could be alot more difficult because ur in school for around 6 or even up to 8 (for those in extracurriculars) hours a day...perhaps, lot of the ap courses are more difficult than college ones..why is this?...my instinct tells me that high school expect more from students who are mostly unemployed with less responsibilities than a college or university does.

I thought AP's were a joke compared to college, but maybe that was just me. Yeah, I've found college a lot more difficult than high school. Even with 6 - 8 hours in high scool, I slept through most of it.

i guess it is good that college is easier than was expected for some of you guys. but why dont you try balancing that with hardcore indepth ECs. It makes your life more fun and interesting. plus..it is still early on in college and the courses you are taking are probably intro courses anyway so it is most likely a review from high school material.

Hah. Hahahahhahahahahah.

College is definitely better than high school, but easy? Hah. You could make it easy, sure, but that would make things much less fun and interesting. If my first few weeks of college had been any indicator of what the rest would be like, I'd be getting a lot more sleep... and I'd be considerably more bored. Try taking a full plate of upper-level classes, being active in student organizations, and having a 20 hour a week research job and then get back to me about things being "too easy".

I'm sure the chem major has some surprises in store for the OP... and the first one might be as soon as the first midterm.
