College/Universities

I enjoy taking pictures and I know I want to learn more about photography. I would love to take classes in college about photography. I don’t see myself having a huge business on photography, but maybe a little bit of photoshoot now and then. At the same time, I know I want to be in medicine in the future. I would also love to be involved into the pre-med world.

What colleges/universities will offer me both? Any programs? I want the two to be balanced (Well in reality, I know it’s not going to be balanced all the time).

You can major in anything and still be a pre-med. Pre-med is an intention, not a major.

You can certainly major in fine arts/photography and still take your required pre-med coursework. (D1 has a med school classmate who majored in music theory & composition, as well other classmates in majored in everything from forestry to theology to English lit to business to physics.)

Pre-med classes are basically intro level science classes and are offered at every college in the country. If your primary interest is in photography, look at schools which have a strong program in that. Then check to see if they offer the needed science coursework. Unless you’re looking at conservatory/art school type programs, the classes ought to be readily available.

But as a point of clarification, if you do choose to pursue med school and become a physician, you won’t have time to run a photography business or even do occasional photo shoots. The life of a physician is not an easy one. It requires long work hours (60+ hours/week is typical) and on-going educational training. It also takes many years (at a minimum, 4 years of college, 4 years of med school and 3-7 years of residency) and a lot of debt before you will able to finally practice your profession.

If you’re not sure about medicine, you should try to do some job shadowing of physicians and other healthcare providers (nurses, nurse-practitioners, physician assistants, medical lab technicians, various therapists, etc) to see if this life appeals to you.

At Brown you can take up to 4 of your courses at RISD (arguably the best art school in the country) http://photo.risd.edu

And Johns Hopkins students can cross register at MICA. (Also a top art school.)
