college visit travel tips needed

H and D will be visiting two schools late March. They will be coming from Ca and are visiting Earlham in Indiana and Univ of Vermont. Both will be visited in the same trip. For Earlham they will fly into IND. D1 goes to school west of Indianapolis and she will drive and spend a night with them before they drive to Richmond. I think they will stay one night in Richmond. suggestions of lodging?
For Univ of Vermont- places to stay, is it worth having them spend a couple of days in Burlington? I see they can fly to Burlington but is there a cheaper airport not that far away?

Also would love to know if anyone knows of a good horse barn nearby UVM? She would be looking preferably for a hunter/jumper barn. Aside from visiting the school she would like to investigate possibly bringing a horse to school at some point.

You may want to post this on Earlham’s thread. I will bet you will have some more suggestions for lodging (Las Ma is from CA and has a daughter at Earlham --she’s always very helpful). I visited Earlham last summer with my D and we flew into Dayton airport which was about a 45 min. drive, so no experience with other airports unfortunately or lodging (I have family an hour from there in Ohio so we already had a place to stay that night). D is doing their summer program this summer (Japanese).

You should contact admissions for both schools and ask them for lodging suggestions -they usually have these on their websites too under “visit” page too. Not sure you will be able to locate horse boarding options easily at either school. I would suggest Green Mountain College which is also in VT. Good luck!

My S is a junior at UVM… Some visit advice?

Unfortunately, there is no other airport nearby. You should fly into Burlington.

Lodging: We really like Green Mountain Suites (about 5 minutes from campus). Holiday in and the Sheraton are also fine and in that area. If you want to stay downton (5 minutes from campus in the other direction), there is a Hilton. If you stay at the Hilton, you will be able to walk to restaurants, Church St., etc. Otherwise you will have to drive a short distance.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Burlington - My husband just stayed at Green Mountain Suites last week and said it was really nice. Coincidentally, I was just looking at it the other day for when to pick up our son for moving out in April and saw a good deal on it for $119 a night on hotels.com. We’ve also stayed at the Hampton Inn in Colchester and the Marriott on lake Champlain. The Marriott was really nice. We stayed at the Comfort Inn and Suites in South Burlington, which was okay, but not my first choice.

I know that UVM has an equestrian team. You might want to send them an email about boarding your horse. And also your daughter might very well want to join their team.
My daughter is in the same boat so we have been actively looking into the equestrian teams at the different schools. Good luck !!

jkiwmom- she is a senior. I will look into Green Mountain Lodge. Since they have never been to Vermont should they consider staying at the Hilton so they can walk downtown?
Carolinejm- she will contact the equestrian team before she visits at both schools. Both schools have boarding on campus but she is concerned she will not get a spot. It shouldn’t be all about the horse but for her it is. She is the one coming up with the money to transport him across the country. We are hoping she reconsiders.
Her best horse option is to get into the local UC or Cal Poly. She could leave the horse at home and still ride on occasion. Still waiting on those admission decisions.
