Wondering if any schools do in-person tours the week before Christmas? Guessing not as most of the currently open December tour calendars seem to end 12/8 or 12/9 for tour sign-ups (and of course most schools are probably on break themselves) but figured I’d ask if it’s at all a thing.
There are thousands of universities in the US and some give tours in December. Can you narrow down what region your are looking at or what type of school you want to tour?
I think that most don’t, but a few do. My son and I went on a tour of University of Iowa over winter break back in late 2019. But I remember looking at the time for schools the offered them then, and only seeing a few.
We are in New England but thinking about a west coast swing that could include e.g. UCSD, UCLA, USC, the Pomona schools, Stanford, Berkeley…
UCSD, UCLA, Stanford are all on the quarter system so will likely offer tours in early December. Tours are usually based on the availability of student guides. Since fall quarter doesn’t start until late September, you might not see tours offered this early. This year, fall quarter finishes early (Dec 9) so student guides will start going home.
Campuses will feel more vibrant and alive while in session, but any visit is better than no visit.
Yup this was more or less my assumption based on what I see in the currently open calendars, thanks.
USC has a large open house, Discover USC, in October. They will also be on the road, sending AO to different states. It isn’t the same as visiting campus but it will help a student connect with AO and demonstrate interest.
Thanks and yup those types of events are definitely on our radar and fortunately they tend to come to our school if the past is any guide.
You might also keep your eyes open for updates to the Exploring College Options and Coast to Coast College Tours.
Some schools completely close for winter break. None of the offices are even open. You need to check before you make plans.
When my daughter was looking we did one tour the second week of December. We ended up being there during finals week. Everyone we saw looked stressed and the campus was very quiet. Our guide told us most people were studying somewhere. It wasn’t the best time for a visit.
Thanks. I’d come across one but not the other.
