Okay, so we are finally making definite plans to do a few college visits with our son. The reason it's so late is because I broke my ankle on 7/5 and that killed the rest of my summer. I'm still in a cast. But we are planning for early Fall.

We are in Upstate NY and looking to head to Buffalo/Fredonia area and Oneonta. Any suggestions on hotel accomendations?

In Oneonta we stayed in the Holiday Inn (back in 2001) which was fine then, but don't know how it is now. We also stayed twice in the Hampton Inn (2006) which was fine and also has a free breakfast buffet.

Hotwire--preferably 3 stars, but 2 stars can be okay too. The Hampton Inn near the airport in Buffalo has nice beds and includes an extensive self-serve breakfast.

If you need to stay in Fredonia, either the Best Western or Comfort Inn are OK. Comfort is a bit newer and maybe a little quieter as the BW backs up to the Thruway. Probably more fun to stay at previous recs, considering the shopping! Fredonia is about a 40 min. drive from there.

Does the Hotel Indigo have free breakfast? I was quoted a rate of $179 a night when I moved my kid to campus last week...

There is also a Marriott (also a little expensive) and a Comfort Inn (free breakfast - a little beat up but clean) right across the street from SUNY Buffalo.

I always use Tripadvisor.com They have great reviews and rankings of hotels/motels in each area. You can look at amenities, compare prices, and see reviews of people who have recently stayed somewhere. We have found some great, inexpensive places that way!

I'm actually the author of the SUNY Buffalo visit-report! My middle kid is now very happy there (going to be an RA this year -- chose SUNY over Pitt, Penn State, Ohio State, and numerous other schools where he was admitted). We'll be happy to answer questions you might have after your visit, if you want to send a PM.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll have to check them out and see what we come up with. I'm just happy we are making visits. He insists that he wanted to go to an OOS so this is progress.

There's a new Homewood Suites (part of the Hilton chain) near SUNY Buffalo. I just stayed there and it's lovely. Free breakfast and late afternoon treats too!

My D is going to Fredonia this year and the Comfort Inn in Fredonia/Dunkirk is great. One of the cleanest hotels I have ever been in. This Thursday we are staying at the Clarion Inn in Dunkirk bc they are the only hotel in the area that gives a Parent Discount and the others are totally inflated for summer. For parents weekend we are staying at the Days Inn, which has lukewarm reviews but we will judge I guess.

For Friday night I booked the Millenium Hotel in Buffalo at a University Rate as well. Taking younger D shopping at the Walden Galleria so we wanted to do it up right.
