(Sorry, I know this isn't really the best forum to post this in, I just see any that college visit threads fit in)

Anyway, can you take college visits the summer after your sophomore year, before you even start your junior year? Is that smart, or do you want to do visits the summer after your junior year before your senior year?

You can do college visits anytime you want - there is nothing written in stone. My son decided on his college when in Jr High, when he went with his big sister on a collge visit, and told her that “this was the place to go”.

When he got older, we did visit some other colleges after his soph year while on vacation, since his choice is not a lock for anyone.

My son and daughter got serious about visiting after Junior years, and we planned the family vacations around where they were considering. Good luck - and have fun visiting!

We did one college visit during spring semester sophomore year to start our kids thinking about the possibilities. But, we did most visits during junior year, taking a little time off of school when necessary. We were done with visits by the time senior year rolled around.

I am not a fan of summer visits. Campuses tend to be beautiful, but deathly quiet in summer. Visiting during a semester allows for the possibility of sitting in on a class, meeting students in the cafeteria and seeing the students in their daily lives.

This is always an on-going debate.
So, I’ll just provide the other side of the coin.

We visited a couple of schools on weekdays in the summer and most of the rest of the visits (so far) have been on weekends in the fall.
The campuses we visited had lots of students there in the summer.
As much as during the rest of the year? No, but …
We didn’t see many students during the fall visits either!
They must all be hiding when visitors arrive. ;)

Since all Open Houses are on Saturdays and the only time that most people can get away for a visit is on a weekend anyway there is, in fact, no opportunity to: “sitting in on a class and seeing the students in their daily lives.”

I am completely in favor of summer visits.
Go when it is convenient for you.
