Hoping to find some more options for my daughter, who wants a strong Japanese program (she plans to major in Japanese and something else, maybe Int’l. Relations). We have UCSD, USC, UCI, and SDSU on the list. Where else should we look? She says she prefers a larger school, so nothing too tiny. I’m just trying to open her eyes to some more possibilities out there. USC will be a reach; UCSD and UCI might be possible depending on her test scores, SDSU will be safety.
Presumably, you’ll want to check the course catalogs to see if Japanese language courses are offered to the fourth year or higher level at the colleges in question.
Perhaps other UCs and University of Hawaii?
SF State’s Japanese program has a good reputation.
Your daughter should consider some of the LACs. Middlebury is famous for languages. Bates has an East Asian studies major and offers Japanese. It has an excellent study aborad program in Japan. Apparently Gettysburg, Earlham, and Calremont-McKenna also have good Japanese programs. Do a search, there are plenty of others.
Earlham is known for its strong Japanese program.
University of Arizona tends to have stronger language programs and does offer Japanese. The other Arizona universities have Japanese programs as well.
Middlebury is the benchmark for language programs and it also has an excellent IR program. However, it’s definitely going to be a reach if USC is considered a reach.
