College within 2 hours (or so) of Stowe, Vermont?

We will be in Stowe, Vermont for a couple of weeks this summer and are thinking of making some college visits (for my rising junior). Can you help me identify schools that might be drivable (from there and back) in the same day? I'm thinking two hours max. She wants a medium to large sized school and probably on the more selective side although it never hurts to find some safeties of course.

(We don't mind doing one overnight but since we already have a place to stay we don't want to double book a lot of lodging....)

So far I've identified:

McGill
Middlebury (although she isn't very interested - something about not wanting to go to college in Vermont)
Dartmouth
UVM (not interested but we are so close that it seems crazy not to see it so she gets perspective on what a large school looks like)

She is not interested in Bennington College nor Champlain College

I know summer not the best time to visit, but a good time to take advantage of staying in the area - and this will be her first look at various college campuses so maybe a good chance to get a bit of a survey.

I know there must be more and hoping you all can help. Thanks!

You’ve pretty much named all of them. The only “big” one on the list is McGill, which is pretty big. There’s also Bishop’s in Sherbrooke, Quebec, but if Dartmouth and Middlebury are too small, Bishop’s will be, too. UVM is a good school, and Burlington is pretty awesome. Middlebury is, of course, great, but if it’s too small, it’s too small.

Thanks - I amended my post because I don’t think she even realizes what small is at this point. (She goes to a small high school and is wanted to spread her wings a little…but a small high school and a small college are two different things.) I shouldn’t rule that much out if it’s easy to get there from Stowe - after all - this is a first look. Thanks!!

I think it’s a little farther than two hours, but there is quite the variety of colleges near Amherst, Massachusetts… UMass, Mt. Holyoke, Hampshire, Smith, Amherst, Williams. Travel a bit more down the road and you have U of New Hampshire. Ok…that’s a lot down the road!

Where are you visiting from? Having lived in the Burlington area for 20 years, I can recommend the area as a great place to go to school, and my own daughter, after having visited schools all over New England (Maine, NH, MA, CT), New York, and Nova Scotia, concluded that she wished that she hadn’t grown up here, because she would love to go to college here. (She’s going to Maine because she feels the need to experience someplace new). Middlebury is a top-notch, highly competitive school. I grew up near CA and first heard of it when their lacrosse team visited my UC campus in the 80’s. Fantastic place.

UVM probably does not qualify as a truly “large” school. It is on the smaller side for a state U. People seem to love it and love Burlington.

I think your initial list hits all the high points. Colgate, Hamilton, Colby, Bowdoin, Bates are all out of range, and they are probably the closest selective options, other than the 5-College area.

McGill, Dartmouth, and UVM qualify as medium to large.

S3 applied to Vermont - it’s the size of Michigan’s directional unis so not too big…not too small. I loved it. S3 loved it, but we found the cost to be prohibitively large given the caliber of the school (S3 is engineering). He had other better options that cost more, but I would secretly loved if he would have chosen UVM. It will be a fun trip, I really enjoy Vermont…almost as much as I love Maine which reminds me so much of the UP. I just remembered…all three kids looked at colleges in Vermont and Maine - yet none ended up somewhere I would have enjoyed…how 'dat happen?

Williamstown and Williams are 3 hours, but you could combine the college visit with seeing some wonderful art museums – the Clark and MassMoCA.

The Amerherst group that Thumper listed is also a good choice – small schools enlarged and enhanced by the consortium. Smith and Holyoke are wonderful safeties for high achieving females.

Thanks for the input all! We live in Connecticut, so the MA schools can be done from home base (and we’d be closer). I really appreciate all of the suggestions!

When you visit McGill, try and stay a couple of days in Montréal to give your D a taste of what living in that incredible city is like. BTW, McGill is very large.

@tomofboston is correct - McGill is very large. I believe there are just under 40,000 students.

Actually, 30,025 full time students at McGill
