Colleges close to Killington, VT

We are planning a spring break trip to Killington and are planning to do a couple of quick campus tours at Dartmouth and Middlebury with our HS sophomore daughter. Are there any other colleges within reasonable driving distance that we should add to our itinerary. She's not really sure what she wants in a college yet (but is leaning heavily toward LAC's), so this trip is more just a chance to expose her to a few different campuses. Thanks in advance for any help.

Williams is not that far if you just go right down Route 7 from Rutland, maybe 2 hours or so. I suspect Skidmore isn't too hard to reach from Killington either since there's a good road that leads from Rutland (Rte 4) to NY State and ultimately much of the way to the Northway--see how that looks on the map; I have made the Williams trip but not the Skidmore one.

Bennington is in Bennington, VT and you have to pass through there to get to Williams.

Skidmore is about 90 minutes away with Union college another 45 minutes further southwest. Depending on how much time you want to spend away from the slopes you can get to the Amherst area in 2 hours or so.

St. Michaels and U of VT - both in the Burlington VT area - not far from Middlebury

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. We'll be looking at maps and trying to figure out what is feasible but you've given us some great ideas. We are actually flying in and out of Burlington, so we may be able to fit in one of the schools on the day we fly in or the day we fly out.

Thanks again!

OK, I'm new on the board, and I'll ask as really stupid question for my first post - what's an LAC?

A LAC is a Liberal Arts College as opposed to a university.

Depending on how adventerous you feel, Boston is about three hours away (90 min. from Dartmouth). There are, of course, a plethora of schools there.

Amherst area has Amherst, UMass Amherst, Smith, Hampshire, and Mt. Holyoke.

Yale is about 3.5 hours away; closer would be UConn and Connecticut College.

I live in Vermont. I did not see this post until you already got plenty of good suggestions.

Middlebury will be approx. 45 min. from Killington and Dartmouth about one hour. I think since you will be going in and out of Burlington, it is worth seeing UVM even if not a LAC, it is not that large of a university and would give a sense of a smaller university in a great small city that is a college town city. While there, a smaller but well regarded school is St. Michael's. A great suggestion already made is that 90 min. from Killington is Skidmore College. Near there is also Union College. If you are willing to do a slightly longer drive, Smith is two hours away, and in that same area is Mt. Holyoke and Amherst. Or you could check out very small Bennington College in southern VT. The idea of visiting Williams is excellent and should be within a two hour drive or so of Killington. Obviously you are not going to do all of these. But the schools in VT can be done for a half day after a morning of skiing, conceivably. Enjoy.

How is St. Michaels College academically? We are looking into it and there are several things we like about the school. My son is top 5% of his class at a very academically challenging school, very high test scores. He is interested in Biology/Chemistry/Environmental Science. Thanks
