I've noticed that a lot of of fall freshmen at colleges like Bloomsburg University pick their top choices for classes, but the college itself assigns them classes and they may end up with their 4th or 5th choices. Other schools let you meet with an advisor and YOU pick your schedule. I know you can add/drop if you don't like your classes, but why would a school essentially pick out your schedule for you?

I think many schools do it for freshmen b/c it's easier on their end -- administratively, it may be easier to just do it for freshmen instead of setting up a time for them to log in and do it themselves on a college system they have never used before. Since some students might struggle to figure out the system on their own, it's likely easier to just have their admissions counselor (or whomever) do it for them.

S's school did this first semester, too. He got a prof. with a terrible rating, on one of those rating web sites, and was able to call the school to change the class, saying he didn't like the class time. They told him they were trying to make it easier.

At my school we pick our own classes...it's not like it's difficult or anything. On the specified day of registration for our class, we go online and go to a website, click the add button next to the courses we want to add. Our advisor approves them later.
