Colleges for Design/Tech: Lighting Design focus

Hi all

I am about to be a senior and am in the hectic process of finding, applying, and auditioning for colleges. I want to be a Design/tech major with an emphasis in lighting design, and have not found many forums on this sight with info pertaining to this subject, as we technicians are a small species so to speak... Anywho I come to ask if any one has opinions on these colleges, specifically I would like to know about their Tech theatre programs. Thank you all and please let me know if you have any questions, all feed back appreciated.

Evansville
TCU
SMU
Univ of Texas
BU
Northwestern
DePaul
Emerson

You could also look into SUNY Purchase, SUNY Fredonia and UNCSA.

Are you looking for a B.F.A. or a B.A.?

Have you considered the West Coast? UCLA have a good tech program.

I really dont care a BFA would be nice however i also want to minor in something so a BA wouldnt be that bad either…I am not interested in a conservatory program however

I second UNCSA and SUNY Purchase.
I also recommend CalArts. If it is bew and cutting edge, chances are they have it.
Boston University has plaenty of acting opportunities for their drama students…so I think there might also be plenty of lighting opportunities there.

If you are not interested in a conservatory then you need to take BU and DePaul off of your list. Both of their technical theater programs are conservatories.

SUNY Purchase is also a conservatory program, I believe.

It sounds like you would like to minor in another subject. I would suggest looking at the schools on your list and see where that is possible. For example – BU is a conservatory based program, but if students there also take a fair number of classes outside of the major and can minor in another area (I so not know if this is the case) it could be a good fit for you.

Hi ILight
Try searching this forum using the term “tech”. There have been several threads on tech theatre including a couple that are specific to lighting. This past year there was a small but enthusiastic group of theatre tech students and parents posting. They were very supportive of each other, recognizing, as you said, that therre are not a lot of tech students on this forum. There was discussion about several of the schools you have listed, along with U Mich, Penn State and CMU. You might try PM’ing some of those CC members to get more specific information on their application process. Also, feel free to PM me - my son is a theatre tech student and I can try to get more information from him for you. One last suggestion - try posting your question again with a more specific title - if you mention lighting or technical theatre in the title, you are more apt to get the attention of the tech theatre people. Good luck.

I have changed the title to the thread to reflect the nature of the topic.

My ex did his MFA in lighting at BU, from what I understand, you need to look at general design, then focus in graduate school.

I know for a fact that SUNY Fredonia has a B.F.A. Technical Theatre and Design which allows you to focus on lighting. But the program is more like a B.A. program because of all of the G.E.s you have to take, and you are allowed to double major or minor in something else.
