On that same college visit trip, we were going to visit UNT on our way home. I think they gave informal tours at a certain time for those who gathered at a certain place. When we got there, we were not allowed to park where we were told to park by some security guard-type attendant who was neither friendly nor helpful. He could not tell us where we COULD park (there seemed to be a lot of street construction going on), so we just drove around sort of looking at the campus. My D had been to UNT with a high school group for some kind of training, so she had seen it, but did not like it. Anyway, we had already been to OCU and she was no longer very open minded about looking at other schools. She is a sophomore now, so that was two years ago. We had not contacted the music department (I'm not sure they even have MT), but were just planning to do a campus tour. Oh, and I wandered through OCU's new music building when I helped my D move in last month. It is spectacular.

Hi musicmon, thanks for your insight on UNT!

You're welcome. After re-reading my post about UNT, I did not mean for it to sound so negative. UNT is one of the nation's top music schools. In retrospect, I think my D did not want to explore it more because it is too close to home! :)

I'm hoping this post restarts this discussion thread....always one of my favorites to poke around in!
My D is a hs junior, and has as little time as the rest of you! So, I am trying to do her legwork, and have the big list permanently set on my desktop. I'm hoping to take her to see Post and Wagner in Feb. Does anyone have any info on these programs? She is pretty sure she wants a school with a showcase. How important is this?
And, we are, as many of you, grappling with the BA or BFA question. Any comments there, too.
Thanks.

What happened with this thread? I saw it resurrected last night by sarahlsmom, but then it disappeared this morning. Only found it by doing a search for "Part 40".

I thought adding a new post bumped threads to the top. Anybody know what the story is with this one?

I think they have been moving servers or something...things hae been strange the last few days.

My daughter is a Junior in HS. She is a very strong vocalist and enjoys theatre studies. She has talked about studing MT in college, but also talks about possibly teaching theatre. The schools she has shown the most interest are schools that appear to have strong vocal programs. Schools included are Oklahoma City, Baldwin-Wallace, and Shenandoah.

I saw that the University of Kansas has a BFA in Voice and Theatre. It is joint thru the Music and Theatre departments. It looks interesting and possibly very much in line with my daughter's interests.

Does anyone have info about or experience with the University of Kansas program? Is anyone aware of any other programs similar to this?

just trying to bump this back up.................

The 2007 College Theatre Directory has been published in the December '06 issue of Dramatics. There's a nice summary of each school, some interesting articles, and fun ads. Articles include: Why Study Theatre?, Choices (BA vs. BFA), The Audition, The Portfolio, Resources, and Regional Auditions.

In the Resources section our beloved CC is identified. Dramatics says . . . "A discussion forum is also available for aspiring musical theare majors." So, we may be seeing a lot more traffic here!

This directory will clearly be of no help to our seniors or regulars on CC, but may help some of the younger ones or newbies.

Would you please post a web-link to "Dramatics" or another way to locate this information?

Thanks!

Here you go:

"Dramatics" is published by the Educational Theatre Association, the group that also runs the International Thespian Festival.

Are others experiencing problems with the board? It was unavailable (for me) all day and night yesterday from several different computers (without any message that it was being worked on, was too busy, or would be back up soon; just "server not found"). I have found it down (for me) for long periods on other days recently, too. I have never seen any mention of this after it comes back up. Is it just me or are there problems for others?

vocaldad

It's not just you.

So far our s. has felt most "nurtured" in tryouts at DePaul for straight theatre and at Michigan (where he was not invited). Has anyone auditioned for Indiana's new BFA? And has anyone gone to Carthage College in Wisconsin for theatre or heard anything about it?
You folks are such an incredible resource. Someone out there always seems to know something!

I know someone who goes to Carthage.

I would say that it's a good environment, but I've heard that they are pretty strict about you attending chapel services etc. because, it is after all, a Lutheran denomination.

But, I would say that their program (from what I have head/seen) is pretty decent.

Mamalot,

My middle daughter (not a theater major) attended Carthage and graduated last May. The school has many wonderful things to brag about. The campus, located directly on Lake Michigan, is beautiful. The class sizes are small and intimate. You know your professors on a first name basis. The school's strongest point in my opinion is that it does an excellent job of fostering a community-like atmosphere. People know each other very well, develop friendships that seem to last for a lifetime (very strong alumni base that continues to be incredibly supportive). My daughter still goes up the school at least once every couple of months to see friends, professors, attend events, etc.

However, I don't know much about the theater classes. My daughter, wasn't a huge fan of the theater productions that she attended but she only attended a couple.

Also, regarding the statement above about it being a rather strict school, that isn't actually true. It is affiliated with the Lutheran church (I think) but my daughter wasn't required to go to chapel or participate in any religious activities other than taking her religion class (which she loved btw). It is supposedlly a "dry campus" but trust me, the students get around it like most other college students!

If I can provide any more information, please PM me.

Carole

Ohh.. thank you for the correction jordnansmom.

I was going by hearsay.

I highly recommend The Hartt School. I'm a freshmen AT there and MTs and ATs are just about as close as we can be so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask me, glejzer@hartford.edu

Wasn't sure where else to post this, but thought some might be interested in this article about admissions at Northwestern:

Carthage is a wonderful, beautiful school; but this has become a very difficult choice all of a sudden.
Carthage gave our s. HUGE scholarships (bless them) and he LOVES the campus and the people; but he also got accepted at University of Miami in MT (one of only three boys), DePaul in Chicago with scholarships, Illinois Wesleyan in MT with scholarships, and Viterbo with scholarships -- although he has not yet auditioned for MT there. He is waiting to hear about Indiana (loved it there); and though he didn't plan to leave the Midwest, U of Miami's Frost School of Music is hard to resist; and though it's Indiana's first MT class, he loved it there, too.
I've been off the board for ages because of an illness with our littlest one, but congratulations and more to all the acceptances and consolation (we sure have been THERE) to those who didn't get in THIS time.
Mamalot
best, and more best,
