Colleges For Musical Theater - Part 40!

Mamalot, I hope your littlest is doing better and is back in good health. And congrats to your son on all his acceptances! It must be lovely to have such wonderful choices ahead. The D of an acquaintance of mine is an MT at Miami (double majoring in MT and marketing, last I heard) and loved it.

Hi everyone -- This is my first post here. Thanks to all for the valuable and (usually!) cheering info. I am wondering why UCLA is not included in the list of schools with musical theatre programs. My S auditioned there and it was the only place in fact, where he had to sing, perform monologues, AND dance. We are waiting to hear about admissions, but it is of course highly competitive, as all of the programs are.

Welcome, nidan! I am interested in hearing what others might have to say about UCLA. However, I am surprised by your comment that your son's audition at UCLA was the only one that required him to act, sing and dance. I think that the majority of BFA (and even some BA) programs in MT require kids to sing, dance and act (do monologues) at their auditions. I am curious to know where else your son auditioned that did not require all three elements, if you care to share.

Nidan,

Welcome to posting on CC and we are glad that you have finally joined in.

As far as the subforums for individual musical theater schools listed at the top of the MT forum, that is not meant to be a comprehensive list of MT schools or programs. It is simply a list of separate forums CC created on individual schools when we had several threads going on these schools and chose to create their own subforums. At the time, Roger Dooley, the Forum Administrator, asked me to give him a list of 30 schools to create the subforums. These are not rankings or anything like that. In fact, there are quite a number of MT programs that do not have subforums but may have threads on this MT Forum. If you visit the Frequently Asked Question link and then go to the "Big List", that is a compilation of all MT programs that have been gathered. UCLA is on that list of programs. That is a rescource for those looking for a list of programs (BA and BFA) for MT. The subforums is not such a list. It is merely a list of which subforums CC has created. A search can be done on other MT programs within the MT Forum and often will result in finding individual threads on those programs.

I have asked Roger Dooley if we can add some more subforums for some other MT programs that are talked about on the MT Forum which have existing threads. He has not added them, but I will ask again.

Best wishes to your son in his admissions journey.

thanks for the info collegemom. Regarding my son's auditions: he opted to just apply to Tisch and UCLA in MT. (He auditioned at USC for theatre and at Whitman for a special theatre scholarship.) He was accepted at Tisch but we do not yet know what studio. Tisch did not require dance, though, at the audition--just 2 monologues and one song.

Nidan, I agree with NotMamaRose that most BFA in MT programs do require songs, monologues and dance at their college auditions. A few do not include dance on audition day. NYU/Tisch where my kid attends, had an optional dance audition for advanced/experienced dancers until now. She did the dance audition for Tisch 2 years ago when she applied. She now goes to CAP21. I prefer schools to include dance at their auditions.

However, at CAP21, for EACH year/class, there are FOUR levels of ballet, four levels of tap, four levels of jazz and on the first day of the semester, they hold dance placement auditions. At some BFA in MT programs, all freshmen take dance together. In such a scenario, I believe it would be important to have a dance audition to be admitted or else the variation in dance levels in a class would be extremely wide and even so, are still likely wide to some extent if there is just one level for the dance discipline per grade/year. With several levels of dance available, it enables the non-dancers or those with little experience to be in level one and those with the most expertise to be in level four, etc. So, that is how that works at Tisch. I still think with the competitive nature of BFA admissions, it would make sense to observe each applicant's dance ability or at least how they move. But I am not the audition committee! But if your son had applied more widely, you'd have seen that most schools included a dance audition. In my D's year, two years ago, she applied to 8 BFA programs. The only colleges where she did not dance at auditions were Ithaca and BOCO. Since then, BOCO has added a dance audition. NYU has eliminated it.

Congratulations to your son on his acceptance to Tisch and good luck with UCLA. If your son does not get CAP as his studio, I can tell you that while he will have to weigh the training and the fit in other studios, that there are many very talented MT students in the other studios and they are cast in many of the musicals. There also is a little MT training in Playwrights and Strasberg studios. Strasberg also puts on some musicals. Your son should learn which studio about a week after his acceptance letter arrives (around April 1).

By the way, Tisch requires two monologues and TWO songs (not one) for those trying for MT.

Thanks! I probably have auditions mixed up--I know Whitman only needed one, and I thought NYU cut back to one (this was in LA) because of time issues. He had 2 ready and did both for UCLA. But anyway, your information about the studios and dance program is very helpful and I sent it to my husband and S right away.

Nidan, my daughter auditioned on campus at NYU (2 years ago). Perhaps there were time contraints at LA Unifieds, I have no clue. It so happens that my niece auditioned this year in LA (but is not from CA) as she has applied to three of the same schools your son has: Tisch, UCLA, USC (among others) but for straight theater. She doesn't do MT.

Good luck to your son. Those are competitive schools. He is fortunate to be accepted so far at NYU/Tisch. Good for him.

Please note that I have added 11 new musical theater school sub forums to the top of the Musical Theater Colleges Forum. I have moved existing threads on these individual schools to their own forums. Please remember that this list is NOT a list of "best programs" or an extensive list of ALL programs for Musical Theater. They are merely sub forums we have created to group existing and new threads on these individual schools that are discussed frequently on the MT Forum. For a list of all colleges that offer a MT program, link to the FAQ page and then to the "Big List" listed there.

Happy reading and posting,
CollegeMom

Hi everyone, another newbie here. I'm wondering about good schools for musical theater in the upper midwest part of the US. My daughter hasn't decided if she wants to go the BFA route or not, but she's interested in MT and dance. (Perhaps that's almost being redundant!) Dance is her strongest area, so she's interested in schools that have an excellent dance component. I'm aware of Michigan and Northwestern. Any others that are well thought of in the midwest?
Thanks for any input you can give. This board is an amazing resource!

It's not upper midwest, but she should look at Webster University in St. Louis

Hey all!
I'm new to the forums but not to MT and I had a few questions about specific schools. For those MALES who were accepted to CCM / CMU / UMich or are current students: How was the dance audition? Would you consider yourselves strong dancers or are you more of a singer or actor? I just want to get an idea of the dance, as I am not the best in that category .

This one specifically for CCM: I have heard a lot about CCM looking for the tall, bulky males and the occasional character type. I am only 5'8 150, and I have traditionally played the ingenue roles.. despite my size. Based on your own size and those you know to be in the program or to be accepted, do you think that this is true?

Lastly, and this is a more broad question to those who were accepted from all the schools listed(I'm sorry if there is a post about this... I looked but couldn't find one), what performance experience (shows, roles, etc) and training have you all had? I'm just trying to get an idea of what it takes to get into these programs. If you think this question is better answered by a previous post you know of, thats great too.

Thank you all for your help!
Tommy

Thanks Marianne406. Can you tell me a bit more about Webster? It looks like you have a daughter currently there in the MT program. How many students are part of the program? Do they share a lot of courses with the regular acting students?

My D is also a MT freshman at Webster (loves it). The freshman class is 16 kids: 6 Regional Theatre, 10 Musical Theatre (I think, or close to that anyway). For the first 2 years Theatre and MT share the same conservatory block of classes (acting, voice & speech, movement, etc.); not sure about last 2 years.
There's lots more info about Webster at top of page on the Webster thread. If you post your questions there, much more knowledgeable folks (than me) will probabably answer your questions. Several Webster students read CC and will usually answer questions that come up! :)

A good friend of my daughter's goes to CCM. He's only about 5'6, but is an incredible singer and dancer. He's average build (not fat or skinny).

BiGismama is right. 5pants also posts frequently on here and she has two sons who are juniors. I'm sure any one of us our our children would be happy to tell you all about it.

You can pm me or my email is marianne406@msn.com

The Boston Conservatory just put up their Senior Showcase website. I thought I'd post it, in case anyone's interested...http://tbcshowcase.net/

Has anyone ever ask about or commented on Palm Beach Atlantic Universities MT program. I understand it is a BA program. Has anyone known someone that attended? Auditioned? Performed?

I got into PBA for MT. I auditioned at the SETC convention.

So tel me what you think of the program as compared to everything I read about on these posts about all the other MT schools. Why did you choose PBA over the rest?
