@turtleneck7- Elon has made an effort to diversify over the years. They were building a multicultural center on campus a while back. I assume it is finished. The campus is gorgeous and worth visiting if you are considering it.

I just got the most amazing phone callā¦from boysx3. They have partially removed the trach tube and she is able to speak!!! Her sense of humor is definitely there and she is eager to get out of the rehab hospital. Iām shaking and crying as I write this ā I have been following her CB page, but this is a huge leap from her DHās last post. Keep those prayers and MiShebeirachs coming for boysx3! I am going to see her Wednesday morning.

Hi! I havenāt been on CC for months - so much going on in life - and just rode a ridiculous roller coaster of emotions learning about boysx3. Thrilled with todayās great news. I had a challenging year, but her situation puts it all in perspective. I hope she continues to do well in her recovery.

Itās hard to believe how long itās been since the beginning of this threadā¦ my DD was a HS senior and waiting to hear from colleges. More than 4 years later (with her degree from UD), she is a Masa Teaching Fellow in Israel - about 3 months in to her 10 month program. She loves it. Meeting so many people, experiencing the country not as a tourist, being exposed to all kinds of Judaism. Next weekend, she is going to a security conference (which includes a trip to Gaza - Iām not thrilled about that). For the people I donāt know on this board, sheās a URJ camp alum (also worked there for 5 summers), minored in Jewish studies, but didnāt actually get involved with Jewish orgs on campus. No idea why she didnāt. You can lead a horse to water, butā¦

My DS is a sophomore at Miami (FL) and allās going well there. Happy to answer questions about UM - he does go to Hillel and thereās a diverse Jewish community there. Not into Greek life at all, so I canāt address Jewish fraternities.

Iām less in the loop at UD as admissions is probably different from when my DD applied in 2009-2010, but I can do my bestā¦

Iām new to this thread and my S is already at college class of 2018. He is going to UMass Amherst and it has a decent number of Jewish students an active Hillel and Chabad and he is going to go to Israel this winter with Birthright through the Hillel on campus (just for Umass Amherst students). It also has a very good business school, nursing school, engineering and computer science school. Well respected out of state, not so much in state. Number two for food according to Princeton review and this includes a kosher option on the meal plan. Very large student body (27,000+) but all freshmen live on campus unless you live within 40 minutes of the school. Great school for the b to b+ student and he is very happy there. Also heard there was a Jewish frat. Just think UMass should be a consideration. If you have any other questions I would be more than happy to answer.

@bucky0926 - thanks so much! U MA Amh is definitely on my sonās radar (heās a junior). Can you tell me more about how the living/food/shabbat/etc. works in the day-to-day life for students there? Does your son live in a regular dorm? Is he in the āHonors Collegeā? Are you guys from MA? (We live outside Cambridge.) Thank you for any anecdotal info!!

My son lives in southwest, the party dorms. He seems to be balancing his social life with his academic life pretty well there even though he is in the party central. My son goes mostly to Chabad house and tells me that he sees different faces all the time but not the same familiar faces and at times its hard to make a minyan. He said that Hillel has more of a following. He went to services for Rosh Hashanah at both (services at Chabad, dinner at Hillel) but came home for Yom Kippur as it was on a weekend. He meet some Jewish boys on his floor and they told him about the Birthright trip. The Chabad house and the Hillel are very close to the dorms in Southwest but the kosher kitchen is closer to the North East residential area (I believe its Worcester dining commons that is Kosher). He is not in the honors college and we are from OOS (NY). We just lost my mother on Monday so I imagine he will make his way to the Chabad house for some special prayers but I know he has a lot to do as he missed school on the day she passed. I think that the school has enough of a Jewish happening without being in your face. If you want to get involved you can, if you donāt no one is forcing you. Also if you go on the Hillel site it gives you a list of schools that are tops for Jewish population and even though UMass is not on the list it still has a good percentage and that was really all I wanted. Let me know if you have any other questions.

bucky - thank you so much for your input on U Mass Amherst and please accept my condolences on the loss of your mother.

@bucky0926 - Thanks so much for all the info! And Iām so sorry about the loss of your mother.

Thank you rockvillemom.

Thank you fretfulmother.

As a B+/A- Jewish high school senior applying to college this year, this thread has been invaluable. Currently I have an ED application in to GW and EA at Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and UMiami. Already been accepted at Tulane, University of Cincinnati, Pitt, and Indiana. I just wanted to promote Ohio State as many people wanting a large school, big on sports, and a fun Jewish environment donāt really look there. Tons of Jews and an amazing surrounding city. Theyāre looking for more out of state students. I would say the academics compare to something like Wisconsin and itās becoming super selective for in-state. The reputation is starting to catch up. Itās a hidden gem in the midwest

@skeliz, itās so great to see the fruits of your labors! Can you explain to the uninitiated (me) how you are already into four schools but still have other apps in, including ED but also EA?

Iām so happy to see the good news about boysx3!

Linymom: Glad to hear that your daughter is having such a great experience in Israel.

Skeliz: Congrats on you acceptances and good luck with GW.

Bucky: Iām sorry about the loss of your mother. Thanks for the information on UMass. We visited with my D several years ago. It sounds like a great fit for your S.

fretfulmother - a student can apply to one ED school and as many EA as they want. If the ED application is an acceptance - they are obligated to attend - and must withdraw all of the EA applications. Some schools - like Tulane, Pitt and the others named, give rolling acceptances to their EA applicants - so one could have a few EA acceptances while still waiting to hear from the ED school in December. Itās a great way to keep the pressure off - by having a few acceptances before Thanksgiving. Mazel tov to skeliz!
